This is no longer some distant theoretical scenario.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon is now openly warning that the U.S. dollar could eventually lose its status as the world’s dominant reserve currency.

The dollar’s share of global foreign-exchange reserves has already fallen from roughly 70% in 2000 to about 57% today.

Dimon’s argument is brutally simple:

“If we’re not the strongest military in 25 years and the strongest economy, we won’t have the reserve currency.”

And the problem goes far beyond monetary policy.

For decades, the United States allowed critical industrial capacity and supply chains to migrate abroad while becoming dangerously dependent on China for strategic materials, including rare earths.

The war in Iran has exposed another vulnerability: America’s industrial base may simply lack the production capacity required to sustain a prolonged high-intensity conflict. Dimon specifically pointed to this problem while arguing that the U.S. must rebuild strategic manufacturing capacity.

Reserve-currency status is not a birthright.

It rests on economic power, military power, deep financial markets, political stability and — perhaps most importantly — confidence that the system will remain stronger and safer than every alternative.

For decades, America could afford strategic mistakes because there was simply nowhere comparable for global capital to go.

That advantage still exists. The dollar remains overwhelmingly important to global finance, and there is currently no obvious replacement capable of reproducing the entire dollar-based financial system.

But dominance can erode long before a replacement fully emerges.

And if Washington continues weakening the economic, industrial and institutional foundations that made the dollar dominant in the first place, the question may eventually stop being:

“Could the dollar lose its reserve-currency status?”

and become:

“How much time does it have left?”
