To the young people of #Rwanda, being young is not enough. You cannot afford to waste any opportunity. Do not let the fear of failure or taking risks stand in the way of who you can be. Claim your rightful place in the world, no one will hand it to you
On April 7, 2025, President Paul Kagame stood before his nation in Kigali. He spoke of colonial racial fabrication, of abandonment. He told Rwandans to die fighting rather than accept the erasure of their history.
🔹That speech became the starting point of one of my doctoral research papers, which I am currently working on.
I study what happens after genocide; who gets to decide how it is remembered, who was responsible, and whose version of the past counts.
🔹You would think that after a million Tutsi are killed, acknowledgment follows naturally, but it doesn’t. Sociologist Jeffrey Alexander calls that assumption the «naturalistic fallacy. » Recognition has to be built and fought for. And whether that fight succeeds depends on who holds the power to control narrative.
🔹My paper introduces what I call the postcolonial memoryscape; the symbolic battleground where former colonies and former colonial powers fight over the meaning of their shared violent past. That battleground is never level; France and Belgium still hold Security Council seats and/ or media infrastructure, academic publishing, diplomatic channels. Beyond economic power, they hold epistemic power; the power to define what counts as truth.
➡️Kagame’s speech was a refusal of that power. When he said Rwandans should die fighting rather than accept erasure, he was making an epistemic claim: you do not get to tell us what happened to us.
🔹The question driving my research extends to every former colony fighting for the right to narrate its own history. Congo and Belgium. Algeria and France. Namibia and Germany. Indigenous nations and settler states everywhere.
I presented this work at UVA this week. Sharing it here as usual because these conversations belong beyond the walls of academia.
