Rick Rescorla was 62, Morgan Stanley’s security chief in the South Tower, a Cornwall-born Vietnam veteran who had spent years drilling his colleagues to evacuate.

When the North Tower was hit, the building told people in the South Tower to stay put.

He told them to leave.

He led thousands down the stairs with a bullhorn, singing to keep them moving.

Almost all of Morgan Stanley made it out.

Then he went back up.

He was last seen on the 10th floor, still looking for people, minutes before the tower fell.

His body was never found.

He had already survived a war.

On 9/11 he used the rest of his life the same way: get them out, then go back for the ones still inside.

25 years ago, thousands of Americans were living one of their last ordinary mornings.

A father kissed his little girl goodbye before heading to work.
A wife said, “Love you. See you tonight.”
Coworkers laughed over coffee.
People boarded planes believing they’d be home for dinner.

They had no idea they were living through the final ordinary moments of their lives.

Within hours, 2,977 innocent people would be murdered by Islamic terrorists.

Mothers. Fathers. Sons. Daughters. Brothers. Sisters. Firefighters. Police officers. EMTs. First responders who ran toward the danger while others ran away.

They never got to grow old.
Never got another birthday.
Never celebrated another Christmas.
Never watched their children graduate.
Never walked their daughters down the aisle.
Never got one last hug.
Never got to say goodbye.

They simply never came home.

And while the world kept moving, thousands of families were left behind to carry that loss for the rest of their lives.

We are still here.

That is not something to take for granted. It is a responsibility.

A responsibility to remember the innocent lives stolen that day.
A responsibility to honor the heroes who ran into hell to save strangers.
A responsibility to tell the truth about what happened and who did it.
And a responsibility to make sure the evil that came for us never gets mistaken for something we should appease.

We fight for the ones who never made it home.

We stand for the families who never got to say goodbye.

We remember the Americans whose futures were stolen from them.

25 years later, their lives still matter. Their names still matter. Their memory still matters.

Never forget what they did.
Never forget who did it.
Never forget the cost of forgetting.

At 19 years old, she became the first female Oklahoma National Guard soldier killed in wartime and the youngest Oklahoma soldier to die in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She was serving with the 700th Brigade Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team when an IED struck her vehicle in Paktia Province, Afghanistan.

She left behind a young daughter.
