My amazing colleague @SherineT on why she quit journalism to lobby the UN to ensure #humanrights are better protected - not just in conflicts and crises, but for all of us. h/t @Donahuefilm #WildVoices
@pass_blue I thought it was ironic that he called out what he referred to as cronyism in the UN and SG Guterres giving his friends top jobs….um… #trump
UNGA meeting on whether to renew UN human rights chief term for another four years as proposed by UNSG. U.S. proposes postponement of item until next week. Ireland objects. now they will vote. Russia now taking the floor.
In my article about rape of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, one person who spoke on the record about having been raped was Sami al-Sai, a freelance journalist in the West Bank. He now reports that Israeli authorities recently delivered a warning to him through a relative: Drop media interviews or wind up back in prison. I wish Prime Minister Netanyahu would investigate these sexual assault allegations from the UN, from Israeli and foreign human rights groups, from journalists, rather than just denounce them, and I likewise suggest that if he thinks there's nothing to them he should allow Red Cross visits to imprisoned Palestinians.
The UN General Assembly will discuss today a Russian proposal to oppose the renewal of the UN High Commissioner for Human Right's term, proposing instead to extend it by 3 months to the end of the 2026, and possibly also a US proposal to delay the appointment altogether.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights is a vital position that should not be used as a political football by states that think they can pick and choose who leads @UN institutions based on whether they are willing to challenge them and hold them accountable.
The role of a Human Rights Chief is to speak out against human rights violations, regardless of who commits them, and to stand up for victims and survivors everywhere, without fear of reprisal. That role should not be compromised.
At a time when the human rights architecture is being challenged and undermined, and at a time too of much change and reform across the UN, the importance of stability, independence and integrity of the UN human rights pillar cannot be overstated. The credibility of the UN’s human rights system depends on protecting its independence from political pressure, especially when that pressure comes from powerful states.

At a time when journalists and media workers face increasing threats—from criminalization and harassment to digital surveillance and political intimidation—this webinar will discuss the current threats facing journalists and media workers globally, from legal harassment to digital surveillance and political intimidation. Through case studies—including the arrest and prosecution of journalist Georgia Fort and other documented instances of governmental retaliation—we will unpack how attacks on journalism unfold in practice. Panelists will discuss how robust advocacy, legal protections, and active community engagement can defend and expand press freedom, safeguard reporters, and uphold the public’s right to know. Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been detained by Kuwaiti authorities without charge since 2 March. This is not about reposting or keeping Kuwait safe, it is about controlling the narrative amid a wider crackdown on freedom of expression across the GCC since the regional conflict began.
@SherineT says we must sound the alarm otherwise we are all not safe.
@USUN@AmbUNReform@SenateForeign@USAmbUN Albanese is an unpaid human rights specialist appointed by the UN Human Rights Council & has nothing to do with the "UN" ie Secretariat in NYC
UN representative for Amnesty International @SherineT tells @SkyYaldaHakim says the charity is seeing a "huge crackdown on freedom of expression" across the Gulf since the Iran War began.
Her friend, Kuwaiti-American journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, was detained nearly six weeks ago in Kuwait after posting video content related to the Iran War.

The UN education agency, UNESCO, says that the bombing of a primary school during the US and Israeli military attacks on Iran on Saturday constitutes a grave violation of humanitarian law.

Trump is basically calling up every journalist in his phone to workshop different timelines and goals for his war. In the past two days:
@washingtonpost: the aim is "freedom for the people" of Iran
@axios: maybe we can "end it in two or three days" with a deal
@nytimes: might be "four to five weeks", I have "three very good choices" who might take control in Iran
@abc: actually, nevermind, we killed those choices
He doesn't sound convinced by any of it. He's throwing spaghetti at the wall. Ultimately I suspect he just wants to say he "solved" a problem that has vexed every American president since Jimmy Carter.
But there's no clear idea what that looks like and no plan for how to get there. And there are plenty of possible scenarios in which Trump declares victory and leaves the region with an absolute mess
Watching CNN’s coverage of the ‘Board of Peace’ - interesting they can have an entire conversation about the next steps in #Gaza , need for Hamas to demilitarize but without mentioning a word about the situation on the ground, ongoing Israeli strikes etc. Do better @BeckyCNN
