“The officers of the American Army do hereby in the most solemn manner associate, constitute and combine themselves, into one society of Friends”. #OTD Apr 15 1783, Maj Gen Henry Knox wrote the draft of the Institution establishing the Society of the Cincinnati. A daguerrotype of John Armstrong Jr with his dog, 1840. Armstrong was the last surviving delegate to the Continental Congress, dying in 1843. He is the only delegate to have been photographed.
I had a great time discussing Maj. Gen. William Heath (1737-1814) of Massachusetts on the @REV250BOS podcast today! Thanks to Bob Allison and Jonathan Lane for having me! https://t.co/ULwLX7mUJR
By December 11, 1776, George Washington, now headquartered in Morrisville, Pennsylvania (then known as Colvin's Ferry), finally received word that General Charles Lee and 2,000 troops commanded by Major General John Sullivan had reached Morristown, New Jersey. Many of Lee’s men had no shoes and had endured the agonizing march from Peekskill, New York. After his capture at the Battle of Long Island, Sullivan was released under the agreement that he would convince members of the Continental Congress to send delegates to a peace conference initiated by Admiral Richard Howe. The conference failed.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy on the Rhaetian Railway, crossing 196 bridges, 55 tunnels, and reaching the Bernina Pass before descending into Italy.
On 1 December 1777, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian military officer, arrives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his Italian greyhound, Azor, to offer his services to the Continental Congress.
Upon landing, Steuben and his party were nearly arrested because they had mistakenly outfitted themselves in red uniforms, leading locals to believe they were British officers.
Steuben would go on to Valley Forge later that winter to drill Washington’s ragged troops. His training manual and discipline transformed the Continental Army into a professional fighting force capable of standing up to the British regulars. In May of 1778 he was appointed inspector general of the Continental Army with the rank of major general.

Those first four years in San Clemente were profoundly difficult and painful. I succeeded in recovering physically, spiritually, and mentally from the cataclysmic defeat I suffered in 1974. As I look back over those years in the wilderness, I would say that I was sustained by always bearing in mind three principles:
• Put the past behind you. Analyze and understand the reasons for your defeat, but do not become obsessed with what was lost. Think instead about what is left to do.
• Do not let your critics get to you. Remember that they win only if they divert you into fighting them rather than driving toward your goals.
• Devote your time to a goal larger than yourself. Avoid the temptation of living simply for pleasure or striving only to leave a larger estate.

Had a great (46th) birthday today in Manteo, NC at the Outer Banks History Center doing research for my next book about the OBX during the American Revolution!
We’re excited to add to our collections a portrait of Anthony Walton White, a NJ-born officer of the #RevWar. The 1790s pastel portrait by James Sharples was generously donated in memory of C.A. Philippe von Hemert by his three sons, all of whom are White’s descendants.
Great turnout today at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown for the first official book lecture/signing for my new book! Many thanks to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation for hosting me! #VAMilitiaCommandersAtYorktown
