We, Ethiopians, Achieved Centuries-Old Dreams
Today, we are on the eve of the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) that marks the realization of a vision held by generations of Ethiopians. For centuries, the people of Ethiopia have dreamed of harnessing the power of the Abbay (Blue Nile) to fuel national development, energize transformation and improve livelihoods. This monumental project, finally coming to fruition, symbolizes our national pride and sovereignty. It is a testament to Ethiopia’s determination to utilize its natural resources responsibly and equitably for the benefit of its citizens and the broader region.
We Have Not Achieved This Result Overnight but Overcome Numerous Odds!
The journey to this moment has been long and challenging. Ethiopia faced international skepticism, economic constraints, and geopolitical pressures from various quarters. Technical challenges, security concerns, and complex negotiations with downstream countries added layers of complexity. Despite all these obstacles, our steadfast commitment, resilience, and innovative spirit enabled the country to progress forward and reach this historic milestone.
The GERD stands not only as an engineering marvel but as a symbol of overcoming adversity through perseverance.
As we have been all along saying, it is built with Ethiopian sweat and blood to benefit not only #Ethiopia, but also the people of African in the region to access clean energy including multiple benefits to immediate downstream countries.
Congratulations to All Fellow Ethiopians who made this possible and those friends of Ethiopia and Africa’s development for enduring support.

An eyewitness in the Amhara region's North Shewa Zone, Moja Wodera, said a drone strike on Feb. 19 has killed at least 30 civilians.
"The victims include a family that was traveling back home after attending a family event," the source, who spoke anonymously for safety reasons, said.
He added there was no active fighting in the area when the drone strike happened.
"The aerial attack was carried out repeatedly. We are neither combatants nor have firearms. We were not even able to transport some of the injured people because all transport services stopped after the attack," he explained.
Another medical source who declined to be named said he saw 8 dead bodies that arrived at his institution. "We were not able to do anything. They arrived after they passed away. I saw charred bodies, and it was very disturbing," he said.
*An attempt to get a reaction from the GoE was not successful.
I urge the Saudi government to release Suleiman Abdelah. You cannot take sides with murderers and arrest a human rights activist. I would like Ethiopians across the globe to use the Hashtag "Freedom for Suleiman Abdellah Now" and tweet at least once a day.
Sources say that divisions among Abiy's generals has erupted. Lt. General Mariye Beyene is demoted. I repeat my call to the country's generals to side with the Ethiopian people and stop serving as a core part of Abiy's brutal and barbaric killing machine.
There's been an outbreak of violence in Ethiopia's Amhara region between government forces and Fano militias. What's behind the new wave of fighting, and what are the repercussions? 🇹
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has expressed "grave concern" over the on-going fighting between Ethiopia’s national army and armed militia group Fano, in Amhara. Fighting broke out after the govt decided to disband all regional forces. https://t.co/QScXkJppvf
