📺 I don't disagree that representation matters. Where I differ is in the assumption that The Polygamist is primarily a text about polygamy.
The series seems far more interested in melodramatic themes of power, desire, secrecy and consequence than in offering a sustained interrogation of polygamy as a cultural institution.
In fact, what makes the text interesting is that it reveals a larger debate in African screen studies: Should African television be read primarily as culture, or should it also be afforded the same generic freedoms-melodrama, excess, spectacle, fantasy-that audiences routinely grant to television from elsewhere?
If every country in the world from the Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa are all complaining about the same thing, how can you put the fault squarely on the victims in defence of the perpetrators? A little accountability and introspection is called for.
I have traveled, life is not simple on the other side, but also life is not simple for us either, the levels are not the same, but leaders can make it work!
This is such a tired rhetoric seeking to paint South Africans as ignorant. We are sitting with the highest youth unemployment rate in the world, travelling Africa is expensive and becomes a logistical nightmare the further north you go so lere batho ba travel ka eng?
White people built up a lot of South Africa’s infrastructure so this point doesn’t really stand. The difference with other african countries, although corrupt hasn’t been colonized by their oppressors living there. Mind you SA is the rape capital of the entire planet. 🤔
I don’t like seeing Jonasi like this man😔💔but every dog has its day and unfortunately this is it, Lust and Money can take you to places like Kuruman but it will always end badly #ThePolygamist
@untando__ i hear you, and you’re right, although it was wild how she knew exactly what he was doing to his family and became cocky afterwards after all that. even towards the end, when she fought with her bestie? not a simple apology nor remorse. hayi bandla.
i can see every character but Lindani? i’m sorry she knew exactly what she was walking into. you’re basically in that house 24/7; seeing how your best friend is affected and her mom.
