Fr Coughlin's views on St. Paul VI and his legacy can be broken down as follows:
Hostility to Vatican II: Coughlin viewed the reforms championed by St. Paul VI as a disaster for the Catholic Church. He vehemently opposed the post-Vatican II transition from the Traditional Latin Mass to the Novus Ordo Missae, viewing it as a betrayal of traditional Catholic doctrine and practice.

Opposition to Ecumenism: While the papacy of Paul VI famously promulgated Nostra aetate—the historic 1965 declaration that absolved Jews of collective blame for the death of Jesus Christ—Coughlin fundamentally rejected this shift. Having spent the 1930s broadcasting antisemitic conspiracy theories and blaming international Jewish financiers for societal woes, Coughlin resisted interfaith outreach.

Unapologetic Traditionalism: Living out his retirement in suburban Detroit, Coughlin published pamphlets attacking the ecumenical council. He maintained an ultraconservative, anti-Communist worldview that considered Paul VI's embrace of modernity and dialogue with the secular world as a fundamental weakness.

Many of us woke up today discouraged by Thomas Massie's loss. Not because any one congressman was ever going to save the country, but because his defeat puts a hard period on something we have been forced to recognize for years. The capital of our nation has drifted somewhere past confused. It is, by now, largely cut off from God and from any honest reckoning with reality.

The temptation in a moment like this runs in two directions. One voice says there are no good men left. Another says the right candidate or movement or election cycle will somehow set things right. Both voices lie, and neither sounds anything like the Faith.

The Church has lived through far darker hours. Thrones have fallen, Christian nations have gone pagan again, hierarchies have rotted from within, empires have hunted the faithful, and whole cultures have laughed openly at Christ. None of it ended the Kingdom.

Dom Prosper Guéranger writes (Wednesday after Ascension):

"How strangely blind are those who see not the superhuman power of this element of Faith, which has not only conquered, but even transformed, the world!"»

And elsewhere:

"He, who after having spent a few short years in one little spot of earth, had but to disappear, in order to draw men's hearts to himself… he must be what he tells us he is: the Eternal Son of God."»

Consider the Ascension itself. Outwardly, it passed almost unnoticed. Jerusalem went about its business; Rome still held its boot on the world's neck; the Sanhedrin kept plotting. To any sensible observer that morning, nothing had really changed.

Eighteen hundred years later, Caesar is dust and Christ is worshiped in every land.

That is the point. Ultimate reality is not housed in Washington, on Wall Street, or in Silicon Valley. It rests with the Incarnate Logos. Truth has taken flesh and has a name, and He reigns whether men acknowledge Him or not.

Clarity, in moments like this, is itself a grace.

The illusion is being stripped away, and the deception is having a harder time holding its shape. More and more men can see that nearly every institution of modernity rests on compromise, appetite, manipulation, usury, spectacle, and a kind of spiritual blindness that has become almost ambient. Even most conservatives now operate inside a framework that has quietly accepted endless war, materialism, pornography, consumerism, and a practical indifferentism that would have horrified our grandfathers.

Catholics cannot build their hope on the beast and then act surprised when the beast behaves like a beast.

Our mission was never primarily electoral. Christ is King Action Ministries exists because the rights of Christ the King and His Church are real things, not slogans. The Social Kingship of Christ describes reality. Nations either conform to Him or they rot.

So yes, grieve. There is something here to grieve. A nation that keeps rejecting truth is not a healthy nation, and a public square in which deception keeps winning is no small evil, and good men being isolated and crushed is, by any honest measure, a wound. But there is purification happening in this moment too.

The fog is lifting.

We are being reminded, again, that the restoration of Christian civilization will not be brokered by media cycles, political parties, or billionaire donors. It comes through sanctity, sacrifice, courage, families, liturgy, ordered homes, prayer, fasting, the patient rebuilding of Catholic culture, and men willing to honor Christ publicly while the world laughs at them for it.

That is why our work matters. The Rosary prayed in the open, the act of reparation made when no one is watching, the defense of the Traditional Mass, the quiet rebuilding of Catholic order inside a home, the gathering of faithful men, the refusal to bow before a comfortable lie, the child raised in the Faith, the rejection of pornography and materialism and cowardice and the spirit of indifferentism, the public proclamation that Christ is King: these things are heavier than they look, because they participate in ultimate reality itself.

The modern world wants to trap men inside the immediate and the visible, inside the political and material, inside the next news cycle. The Ascension cuts through all of that. Christ reigns above every principality and power. The center of reality sits on a throne, and the throne is not in any newsroom or boardroom or capitol.

From that throne, Christ governs history still.

So hold fast. Hold fast to the Church, to Tradition, to the sacraments, to truth, to reality itself. Come out of the beast. Refuse its lies, its distractions, its false hopes, its manufactured appetites, the spirit of indifferentism it breathes into anyone who lingers too long inside it. And refuse, just as firmly, the temptation to become cynical or worldly or just plain tired.

The saints conquered empires they never possessed.

Jesus is King.
