First and foremost, in Islam, anyone who unjustly kills another person is committing one of the gravest sins in the religion. The fact that such a person identifies as a Muslim, recites Islamic supplications, or shouts the name of Allah does not make the act Islamic or permissible. This is not merely my personal opinion; it is firmly established in Islamic teachings.

Regarding Boko Haram, I am not going to deny their identification with Islam. The founder of Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, was a Muslim from Borno State. So, if we are discussing whether they have claimed an Islamic identity, the answer is yes. But there is an important distinction we must make: a person can identify as a Muslim and still commit acts that Islam explicitly prohibits. Likewise, a Christian can identify as a Christian and still commit acts that Christianity condemns. The actions of an individual or group should therefore not automatically be attributed to the religion they claim to follow.

Boko Haram members and other criminals who kill, kidnap and terrorise innocent people are not doing so because Islam commanded them to. They are acting upon their own misguided ideology, criminal interests, political motives, greed, or other personal objectives. Their actions should be judged against the teachings of Islam, not used to define Islam itself.

One of the clearest ways to understand Islam’s position on murder, kidnapping, banditry and terrorism is to look at the punishments and obligations prescribed by Islamic law.

For example, Islam recognises Diyah, commonly translated into English as “blood money.” In cases of accidental or unintentional killing, the Qur’an prescribes compensation to the victim’s family. In today’s Nigerian currency, the exact monetary value of Diyah is ₦805,724,000. This is if you’ll kill someone by mistake. Not just that, you have to free a slave, but in today’s society that we don’t have slaves again, you have to observe 60 days of fasting. And importantly, the prohibition against unjustly taking human life is not limited to Muslims, either the person you kill is a Muslim or not, as long as you the killer is a muslim, you must serve the punishment that Islam prescribe.

Now, regarding kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.

If someone commits armed violence, kills people and takes their property, the classical jurists discuss execution and crucifixion among the prescribed punishments.

If someone kills but does not take property, execution is the applicable punishment.

If someone takes people’s property through such armed violence without killing, the punishment is cutting off the hand and the opposite foot (right hand—left foot).

If someone terrorises people through armed force and weapons without killing anyone or taking their property, exile or banishment is the punishments discussed by the jurists.

If someone terrorises people without weapons, such will be jailed.

Therefore, when Boko Haram, bandits or any other armed group kidnaps innocent people, murders, steals their property and terrorises communities, it is completely wrong to suggest that they are carrying out Islamic teachings simply because they use Islamic language or identify themselves as Muslims.

Quite the opposite: the Qur’an itself condemns the very kinds of violence and corruption that they commit.

So, Boko Haram members and violent bandits may identify themselves as Muslims, but their crimes cannot be justified by Islam. A Muslim who genuinely understands his or her religion should condemn murder, kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and the unjust taking of people’s property, regardless of who commits them.

Islam is not judged by the crimes of those who claim its name. It is judged by what the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah actually teach.

So Bokoharam are not going to heaven.

Like I have always said, Messi is an awesome player. No one can take that away from him.

However, I still believe FIFA has favored him on several occasions.

Yesterday's free kick only strengthened that conviction for me.

From what we all watched, no whistle had been blown. Messi spoke with the referee, what looked like a go-ahead was given, and he took the free kick while the goalkeeper was still getting set.

To me, that decision wasn't handled fairly. That, of course, is my opinion from watching the incident.

On the other hand, I also believe Ronaldo enjoys a different level of love from football fans around the world.

This is how you know people who know very little outside their own field. The tweet reeks of arrogance wearing intelligence's clothes.

I once had a lecturer like that. He believed anyone who studied anything besides biochemistry or medicine had wasted their time. "Why would you go to school to learn accounting? Any fool can count money. Why would you go to school to study theatre arts? You don't need school to be a jester." Those were some of his exact words.

A few years later, I took part in a stage play with theatre arts students at the University of Ìbàdàn. I couldn't help but respect them. Some were juggling three or four productions at once and still showing up to lectures. I was in just one production, and trying to memorise my lines while life threw its usual wahala at me was already a lot. If that one production stretched me, I can't imagine carrying four. Whatever else those students lacked, intelligence was not on the list.

It makes you wonder what else such people get wrong without knowing it. The man who thinks accounting is just counting has clearly never tried to reconcile a company's books after someone else has hidden a theft in them. The man who thinks acting is just standing on a stage and talking has never tried to make an audience cry on command, eight shows a week, using only his voice and his face.

The bottom line is this: intelligence shows up in many forms, and the moment you decide only your own form counts, you've already proven you don't have enough of it to recognise the rest.

South Africa to Charge Nigeria for the Deportation Costs of Nigerians in the country

The South African government has announced plans to recover the costs of deporting undocumented foreign nationals by billing the governments of their home countries.

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, countries whose citizens are detained for violating South Africa’s immigration laws and subsequently deported will be expected to cover the expenses incurred during the process.

The proposed measure comes as South Africa intensifies efforts to curb illegal migration and address growing concerns over undocumented foreigners living in the country. Authorities say more than 100,000 undocumented migrants have been deported over the past two years, placing significant financial pressure on the state.

Officials noted that the policy would also apply to foreign nationals held in criminal detention facilities before being returned to their countries of origin. The government said it would work through the Department of Home Affairs to pursue reimbursement from affected countries.

The announcement follows recent repatriation exercises by several African nations, including Nigeria and Ghana, amid increasing fears among their citizens residing in South Africa. Hundreds of Nigerians have already returned home under a government-coordinated evacuation programme, while Ghana has facilitated the return of about 1,000 of its nationals.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration has maintained that enforcing immigration laws is a sovereign responsibility and has vowed to strengthen efforts to identify and remove undocumented migrants. The new policy is expected to spark discussions among African governments regarding migration management, diplomatic relations, and the financial responsibilities associated with deportations.
