**Important Update**
The Shipwreck Museum Trustees have decided to close the Museum until spring 2021. We have made this decision to spend time focusing on improving exhibitions, and undertaking vital conservation work.

English Tourism Week 2020
We support English tourism because without our visitors, the museum wouldn't be able to remain open. We couldn't look after our collection, and do vital conservation work.

When old rope on board ships became worn and useless, it was often cut into shorter lengths to make such things as mops and mats, whence it was known as “junk”. We use the word today for old, discarded materials.

The 'Primrose' built in the 1890s, and was the last of the traditionally built Sussex barges. Rescued from the mud at Rye Harbour in 1992, and brought to the museum. We're currently working on a conservation project.

Interesting fact for the day. Before the word Port came into use it was called Larboard, short for Ladder board, the side of the ship you leaned a ladder against to load and unload it.

Important Update

In view of the developments with the Coronavirus pandemic the Shipwreck Museum Trustees have decided to close the Museum. We have taken this decision to protect, as much as we can, our volunteers and members of the public. We will re-open as soon as possible.
