In 1988, Indian television audiences witnessed a monumental achievement by Shyam Benegal - 𝘉𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘬 𝘒𝘩𝘰𝘫, a series based on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's seminal work, "The Discovery of India". This ambitious project aimed to capture Nehru's perspective on India's rich heritage and culture, making it accessible to a broad audience. What's remarkable is that Benegal didn't simply adapt Nehru's work; instead, he added depth by incorporating critiques and alternative viewpoints . This nuanced approach might be challenging to replicate in today's era , making Benegal's accomplishment all the more impressive, even 36 years later.

A week after Narendra Modi became prime minister, Network18’s human-resources department handed a letter to Sagarika Ghose, a senior editor, just as she was getting ready for her primetime show. The letter, a copy of which The Caravan has, said that the terms and conditions of her services had been changed. “You have now been redesignated as Deputy Editor, Research,” it said. “With immediate effect, you will not make any appearance on any shows and/or programmes of the channels operated and broadcast by the company as news reader, anchor, expert and/or commentator.” She did not go on air and soon resigned.

The intention, Ghose said, was to humiliate her, a result of Modi not liking her previous work, particularly from the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. In an opinion piece for the Indian Express from that year, Ghose had written, “Modi spews vicious rhetoric. He is determined to yank India back to a war zone where we all rush towards, the ghost of Mahmud of Ghazni with trishul held aloft.” In a later piece she wrote, “Why are other politicians so weak they cannot collectively consign Modi to the lunatic fringe where he belongs?” Ghose had an inkling that journalists like her would not survive the takeover and may soon be asked to leave. “We were journalists of the 1990s generation. We covered the 2002 Gujarat riots and the aftermath,” Ghose told Sagar. “We had a clear-eyed understanding of the kind of dangerous and reckless communal politics which Mr Modi plays.” (Ghose is married to Sardesai and is now a member of the Rajya Sabha from the All India Trinamool Congress.)
