Hundreds of central government employees protest outside North Block. Their grievances include lack of promotion despite large scale vacancy in ministries and departments. The Central Secretariat Service (CSS) officials took out a peace parch today.
My father and I discuss a lot about these issues at home. Here is our response to T M Krishna anna's article in Telegraph India today.
@tmkrishna Anna, this is with reference to your article “Heartless devotion: what ails India’s bhakti fabric”, in Telegraph today.
I don’t know enough to understand if I am Left, Right or Center, but your description of a Rama temple supporter definitely doesn’t represent my experience and hence this response.
In bhakti, there are as many expressions as there are people. The stereotype of elite bhakti (higher-caste/class bhakti as you call it), and underprivileged bhakti and the painting of the former as fake and the latter as genuine is all naively binary. Such carelessly produced "insights'' have created much fractionalism; with that you have just invited the fringe here and excluded the saner ones. Please come to a Sampradaya Bhajan today and see for yourself the “upper class” very physically frenzying to the namaavali. Or come to Tiruvannamalai pournami girivalam where a million turn up & check your stereotyping.
Modi ji spoke fervently about the spirit that is Ram, the power, the mahima of it. Being a Hindu himself, he will be rhetorical and emphatic about it. We all will be. Hinduism is the only religion where obeisance paid to a deity is also viewed as obeisance to truth, an energy form, the ultimate indivisible consciousness or divinity, and not just to a godhead. In the context of Modi ji’s speech, Ram is righteousness, truth, valour, strength, consciousness, and all that. It’s naive of you to perceive this as being against minorities. And when I say mahima, I don’t mean being in awe of his exploits. It is a moment of remembrance of righteousness, love, and the vastness of a supreme power that lies beyond. Most of us, including me, didn’t sport an attitude of triumph over minorities or anything like that - it is a feeling of homecoming of a civilizational symbol.
And how are you so sure of the fakeness in Modi ji? First of all, are you the same when you are at home and outside? Is there a possibility of Modi ji being fake at some level? Sure. In fact, someone that’s not even slightly fake would be a Jnani & definitely you and me are not that. But, is that enough to negate the presence of genuine bhakti? Definitely not. The feeling that stems from seeing a ‘devout Modi’ photo, even if it may be curated at some level, is not one of hate and violence but of surrender, joy, and awe of Ram’s vaibhava. On this note, I have had a friend tell me that he finds your tears, and emotions on stage fake. I didn’t agree because I am quite moved by your music & believe you are yourself genuinely moved too. One explanation might be that he was conflating something about you that he didn’t like, with your stage persona. And I believe you might be doing that to Modi ji here.
It is a universally known fact that the Mughals wreaked havoc and built mosques over temples to assert dominance and destroy existing culture. By the way, comparing this to violent Hindu kings is not a strong argument, because of the stark differences in the proportions of incidents of violence and moreover, due to the fundamental differences between the two religions. I am surprised when you say that the verdict says “There is no proof of a temple underneath…”. The 1045 page judgement says that there was proof of a Hindu structure underneath. Now, is the question of whether the Hindu structure was a Hindu temple contextually very relevant here?
Imagine a person who's proven to have destroyed a document relevant to a property dispute. The onus is on him to prove that he did not destroy something that would have given the property to the other side. The SC noted that the structure underneath was a Hindu structure but wasn't sure if it was a temple. The temple supporters cannot produce more evidence than what was left behind by the ransackers. Hence the onus on proving that the Hindu structure was not a temple is on the other side. The only way you can escape this is to claim that there's proof that every single artefact destroyed is lying there still & that the excavation got all of that out. How can you claim it if you are not even sure what was destroyed? By reassembling all that like a Lego block structure and proving that it's self-contained?
I find you saying “repetition of falsities by powerful folk” here, very insensitive Anna. From any premise, to produce more than what the logic of the commoners would yield is an appeal to privilege. It is violence and the stature of the author becomes the spring board for such enterprise.
When something is undone after years of suppression, it is normal to expect frenzied expressions, exaggerations, and rhetorics. This is not to deny the existence of some mindless baggage-fueled frenzy (I mean the “finally we win!!!”, “gotcha Muslims!!” attitude). But I find associating that with Modi ji’s actions, and as a consequence of the Ram temple resurrection unreasonable. We have had and will have fringe elements that are reactive, mindless, blinded, and gratuitously expressive without substance for every large-scale event. And to your point on the riots: this is an issue that goes back centuries, consequently involving several layers of contextualisation. So picking up incidents of violence from a small fraction of the past will make the big picture unreasonably skewed.
In your mind, a person deeply interested in Vedanta cannot support the outward expressions to the Ram temple, and that anyone that does is a hater of the minorities. Not only do such RJB-supporting Vedantins exist, but they might likely have more love for the minorities and underprivileged than you and me. Please be open to this possibility. To assume that refined people that also need a Rama outside, should not show any outward expression is a little rushed and baseless. You have quoted Thyagaraja swami’s definition of Rama bhakti; however it’s interesting that you will find any number of, even more radically inward looking quotes from our sages that come down heavily on even the slightest symbolism. You know enough to not decontextualize this, but sadly you have, Anna.
You have been a great ambassador for our music, have made original contributions, and have spoken with a lot of clarity on so many matters of our times. I look forward to you happily debating with the more serious contributors of the other side without the threat of cancellation hanging over their heads.
Here’s to a happy debate ahead;
You can express yourself animatedly and shout Jai Shri Ram and still be a loving man.
You can think of this as a civilizational correction and still be a loving man.
You can also think "Why is all this necessary now?" and still be a loving man.
You can also say "For me, Rama is in my heart, not outside" and still be a loving man.
You can be completely neutral and have no opinion on this and still be a loving man.
But I doubt if you can be a loving man while calling any of the above a hater.
