This scene is a great example of how Cassie’s mind works emotionally. When she got involved with her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, her guilt wasn’t really centered around how deeply Maddy would be hurt. Most of her fear came from what she might lose, the friendship, the stability, the connection, and the consequences falling back on her.

That’s what I find interesting about Cassie as a character because I know a lot of people like that in real life. They aren’t necessarily trying to be cruel, but they become so emotionally consumed by their own feelings, fears, and desires that they stop fully processing the damage they’re causing to other people. The selfishness becomes deeper and deeper because they emotionally justify everything to themselves instead of confronting it honestly.

What also made the situation easier for Cassie was Maddy’s reaction. In a way, Maddy emotionally stepped back from the fight instead of completely destroying Cassie over it. She chose to suppress the pain and let Cassie continue with Nate rather than dragging the situation out forever. I mean by season 3 she doesn’t even care about Nate or the cheating, all she cares about is money.

And that’s important because it wasn’t like Cassie truly fixed the situation herself or gave some deeply sincere apology that healed things. The power over how far the consequences would go was mostly in Maddy’s hands, and Maddy chose to let go rather than continue emotionally fighting it.

I have a theory: because Maddy always seemed to want to look like Cassie, and because there were so many compliments about Cassie’s body throughout the episodes (Like the original post below), that may be why Cassie felt the confidence to sleep with her ex-boyfriend. She probably knew that was one of Maddy’s biggest insecurities and almost had this unrealistic sense of having the upper hand. Maddy always seemed insecure about how she looked and talked about it in the earlier episodes.
