In the summer of 1980, a distraught 7th grade boy stood in the courtyard of a modest house in Mylapore, watching his father toss his cricket bat down a deep well. A fast bouncer had shattered the boy's spectacles during a local match & his father, a renowned Sanskrit logician, was terrified for his son's sight.

"Your cricket days are done," his father declared, handing him a violin. "If you want to master precision, master this."

The boy did not throw a tantrum. He directed his focus toward the strings, training until he was performing alongside musical legends, even taking direct corrections from Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi.

5 yrs later, he suffered another blow: he failed to clear the IIT-JEE examination.

He did not give up. He enrolled in a regional engineering college, quietly mastering computer science logic gates. He eventually worked his way into IIT Madras as a postgrad researcher, earned a PhD, joined as a prof & eventually became the Director of the very institute that had once turned him away.

By 2011, while the world was building consumer mobile apps, this prof was looking at a hidden national vulnerability: every radar, fighter jet, banking server & defense system in India was running on foreign-designed microprocessors.

He had a single question in his mind: "We can test that a foreign chip does what we WANT it to do. But can we guarantee it does not do something we DO NOT want it to do when a war starts?"

He proposed building a completely indigenous, industrial-grade microprocessor from scratch. Global tech giants insisted it could not be done w/o billions of dollars in infrastructure & massive foreign patents.

He did not care. Working out of cramped labs on long shifts, he & his team adopted the open source RISC-V instruction set. They hand-coded logic gates, mapped silicon layouts & verified billions of instruction cycles.

In July 2018, a tiny 16mm² piece of silicon codenamed Risecreek arrived back at the lab. The team wired it up, flipped the switch & watched a flickering monitor as the Linux operating system booted on 100% Indian-designed silicon for the 1st time in history.

Today, his SHAKTI processor architecture powers everything from defense communications to space grade controllers built in collaboration with ISRO.

The Battle of Point 4875 (Mushkoh Valley) stands among the fiercest battles of the Kargil War. On 04 Jul 1999, the brave soldiers of 17 JAT and 13 JAMMU & KASHMIR RIFLES launched a determined assault against well-entrenched enemy positions in treacherous terrain. By 05 Jul 1999, Point 4875 Top had been secured. Supported by 2 NAGA, 12 MAHAR and 21 PARA (SF), the troops continued relentless operations, culminating in the capture of the entire Point 4875 Complex on 08 Jul 1999.

During the night of 04/05 Jul 1999, Rfn Sanjay Kumar, PVC, displayed extraordinary gallantry and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra. Fighting alongside him, Rfn Shyam Singh, VrC (Posthumous) of 13 JAMMU & KASHMIR RIFLES displayed exceptional courage under intense enemy fire.

The relentless and precise fire delivered by the Gunners of 41 Field Regiment, 197 Field Regiment, 315 Field Regiment, 108 Medium Regiment, 139 Medium Regiment, 158 Medium Regiment, 253 Medium Regiment, 1889 Light Regiment, 244 Heavy Mortar Regiment and 212 Rocket Regiment, under the coordinated fire plan "Fight Clever", prepared by Col NA Subramanian, YSM, Commanding Officer, 315 Field Regiment, played a decisive role in enabling the Infantry to achieve victory.

India remembers with pride and gratitude. 🇮🇳

No society should celebrate a man being driven to burn himself alive. But moral clarity demands that we distinguish between self-immolation for national freedom vs jihadist terrorism.

Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen set himself on fire outside the UN headquarters in New York on July 2. But he directed violence against himself because every peaceful avenue for speaking about China’s occupation and cultural erasure of Tibet had seemingly failed him.

A jihadist terrorist directs violence against innocent strangers - children, commuters, worshippers and families. He does not die demanding liberty for his people; he murders others to impose a theocratic order upon them.

One is the desperate sacrifice of a nationalist trying to awaken the world’s conscience.

The other is cowardice disguised as martyrdom: the slaughter of defenceless people marketed as faith, and frequently accompanied by dreams of subjugating or exterminating those branded “kafirs.”

We must never romanticise self-immolation. But neither should we erase the profound moral difference between sacrificing oneself for freedom and sacrificing innocent people for religious supremacy.

Lobga Rangzen’s death should shame the United Nations and every government that looks away while China attempts to erase Tibet.
