Tesla is uniquely positioned to completely disrupt the broken car rental business by building a direct competitor to companies like Hertz.
Why the current model fails:
The legacy rental experience is defined by friction. Customers face long lines at counters, confusing insurance upsells, high and unpredictable fees, and a fleet of vehicles that are often poorly maintained or lack modern technology. For the rental companies themselves, the business is plagued by massive depreciation costs, high maintenance overhead for internal combustion engine vehicles, and the logistical nightmare of managing physical lots.
How Tesla can fix it:
Tesla can eliminate the counter entirely. By leveraging its existing app ecosystem and phone key technology, a Tesla rental service could allow users to book, locate, and unlock their vehicle entirely from their smartphone. There would be no lines, no paperwork, and no upsells.
Furthermore, Tesla's vertical integration offers a massive advantage. With over-the-air software updates, built-in navigation, and the seamless Supercharger network, the customer experience would be vastly superior to traditional rentals. Maintenance costs for an EV fleet are significantly lower, and Tesla can manage the lifecycle of the vehicles directly, potentially even utilizing them for a future robotaxi network when they are retired from rental service.
It is time for Tesla to take the next step and redefine how we rent cars. $TSLA
