#throwback June 2021, @TheMutambuze asked me to be his wife - five months later, we were married. Iโd been waiting for marriage since I was about 27, and when it finally came at 43, all my lofty ideas of how it would happen had morphed. From a surprise engagement where my husband-to-be would serenade me to the question being popped during a private dinner in a fancy restaurant, nothing prepared me for the beauty & significance of how it actually all panned out.
First, I picked out the ring. It was not quite how Iโd planned it in my head, but it was during the COVID lockdown, and with restrictions on movement, our best bet at getting a ring was driving to the jewellery store & picking it out myself. I didnโt know many jewellers, so I went to Sheraton and popped into the only open store. I must have spent almost two hours trying to pick out the perfect ring; there were so many options, and I didnโt know what my husband would have wanted. So, I asked the jeweller if he could recommend several rings based on my desire for something simple and elegant. Despite the store's policy of trying on a maximum of three rings and not taking pictures or recording videos, the jeweller was gracious enough to let me get my husband on a video call and make the decision together. The experience of picking out the ring together was priceless. It would be the first of many vital choices we would come to make together. The start of a life of agreement - how can two walk together unless they agree๐ค?
Now that we had the ring, we needed to formally get engaged. We wanted it to be private & intimate. No bells. No whistles. No cameras. No lights. No action! Just two witnesses. The second of many decisions we would come to make together. Somewhere in the course of the evening, we prayed, and right after the prayers, with both of us still on our knees, my husband asked me to marry him. It was nothing like I imagined. It was surreal. It was the perfect way to start our journey of oneness in marriageโin prayer, agreement, and with the perfect witnesses.
And just like that, on a beautiful June evening, over tea, laughter, and conversations on marriage, parenting, politics, sport, faith and everything in between, our journey to oneness started before the two people closest to usโ @arinaitwerach (my maid of honour who also orchestrated the meeting with my husband in January 2019) and her husband @benmwine, my friend of over 20 years.
