Beneath a gigantic peach tree, the underworld's entrance is guarded by two gods. The tigers would be fed any demons that injured people during the night.

According to legend, the emperor of the Ming dynasty commanded all households to adorn their doorways by pasting the word "fú." He dispatched soldiers on New Year's Day to check on everyone's compliance with his directives.

One illiterate household was discovered to have pasted the word inverted. The emperor commanded that the family be put to death as a punishment.

Fortunately, the empress was present and provided an explanation when the emperor ordered the family to be punished by death: "Upside down" (倒 / dào) is a homophone of "here" (到 / dào), and when it is upside down, it indicates that fú is here, indicating that fortune and happiness have already arrived.

The monarch accepted the reasoning and released the family. From that time on, the word was hung upside down for good fortune and to remember the benevolent empress.
