Looking forward to #whiterock documentary at #4pines#torquay tomorrow night. We have posted on other social media our observations of the urchin barrens in #willlianstown. We made our observations incidentally while exploring ‘the crystals’ with an ROV back in 2019
We were focused on having a great encounter with some #squid at the time but the more time we spent diving the ROV in the area the more interest we had in the seemingly unusual abundance of urchins.
White Rock is hitting the road!

#Queenscliff Pier Part 2. It was an early morning start, sun started to come out as it moved to midday and we got some space off the end of the pier. Sandy bottom, big school of #australianherring#tommyruff and some #australiansalmon just keeping their distance. #piers#fish
Back in the water with our new drop camera setup. The drop camera allows us to make observations in conditions and environments that an ROV is not always suitable for. This is #Queenscliff Pier Part 1. Initial drop, visibility, initial look under the pier and weed beds
Seeing predation by one of the oceans great predators is a goal with the ROV, although unlikely anytime soon. In the meantime we were greeted with this during a walk along the beach near Collendina. Surfing and heading a little deeper?...take care #seal#oceangrove#shark
The main driver behind starting exploration with our 'ready to dive' ROVs from the shore we are exploring the shallows but still finding things we think are important to appreciating and understanding the ocean. For more inspiration from @SylviaEarle watch #Missionblue, loved it
I think all kids start out as explorers. I think even all of you, whoever you are or wherever you are, you don't lose that part of being a kid, asking questions: who, what, why, where, when, how? That's what explorers do. That's what scientists do.
@KCoastcare We do see a lot of them in the shallows at Willianstown, they seem to like coming and sitting in front of the ROV. Might need to get that snorkelling spot from you DM if it is suited to an ROV dive! We have a few more pics and vids on insta @rovwith
@KCoastcare Yes. I have since taken some better footage of these guys hanging out in a Zebrafish school. Seems they aren’t too fussy on what type of stripes you have 😁🦓🐠
Bringing local and relatable ocean, bay, and river locations to more people would be key. Having more people explore and maintain watch in their 'blue backyards' is also important. ROVs and citizen scientists are set to play a big role #ROV#citizenscience#openexplorer
Important piece from Dr. @ayanaeliza about ocean conservation. It's not a distant problem. It's an urban issue, intertwined with livelihoods and opportunities to make a difference in your own blue backyard.
