Marvel is spending over $180 million on three deals to undo the ending it spent 11 years building.

In 2019, Endgame gave everyone the perfect exit. Steve Rogers got the dance with Peggy. Tony Stark got the funeral. The Russo brothers walked away from the second-biggest movie ever made at $2.799 billion.

The plan was to hand the universe to new heroes. The audience declined the handoff. The Marvels grossed $206 million on a reported $270 million budget, the lowest-earning MCU film in history. Five years of introductions, and none of the new faces could open a movie like the old ones.

So Marvel bought the old ones back at record prices. Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly earning over $100 million to play Doctor Doom across Doomsday and Secret Wars, plus private jet travel, dedicated security, and an entire trailer encampment. The Russos returned for a reported $80 million to direct both films. And Chris Evans, who spent seven years insisting Steve's story was complete, is catching Mjölnir in a trailer.

Downey made $500,000 for the first Iron Man. He's making 200x that to come back as the villain.

Marvel spent half a decade testing whether the brand could carry new faces. The $206 million answer sent them straight back to the old ones, at a 200x markup.
