STOP ASKING YOUR SON "HOW WAS SCHOOL."

He will say "fine" every single time.

A child psychologist told me to replace it with one of these 4 instead:

To any young kid reading this…

I’ve doubted myself in every league I’ve ever played in.

Ryman Prem.
Conference South.
League Two.
League One.
Championship…

And even right before my first Premier League start last night.

That’s not weakness.
That’s being human.

That’s being alive.

When I was growing up, I thought Premier League players were superhuman.

Like they never felt doubt.
Like they never felt nerves.

The truth is…. it’s often the opposite.

Social media won’t tell you that sometimes you step out there with no confidence. That’s normal. That’s ok!

You now have to then step out there with courage.

Confidence feels good.
Courage doesn’t.

But you do it anyway. Show courage enough times…. You build confidence.

Here’s the mindset that’s carried me for 31 years.

When it goes well:

I worked for it.
I earned it.
Well done.
Watch it back.
Get better.

When it doesn’t:

I know I prepared the best I could.
It didn’t go exactly to plan. That’s football.

But Well done.
Watch it back.
Get better.

That simple recipe gave me a special moment last night.

Leading the team out.
Playing alongside a group that fights for every ball.
Celebrates tackles.
Gives everything for the city of Sunderland.

And sharing it with supporters who never gave up, even after four tough seasons in League One.

So if you’re a young player feeling doubt…
Low confidence…
Or like you don’t believe in yourself…

You’re not alone.

Every player feels it.

Confidence isn’t something you’re given.

It’s something you build.

Bit by bit.
Day by day.
With courage.
With work.
With learning.

Anything worth building takes time.

But that’s what makes it so worthwhile!

Thank you @SunderlandAFC ❤️🤍

Before you get into an argument remember this quote..

When you understand this, stress becomes meaningless.

Thomas Frank highlights a reality many fans — and even coaches — forget.

During the game, players don’t need judgement.
They need support.
They need encouragement — even after mistakes.
The match is about energy, belief and trust.
Analysis comes later.

𝗔𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

If you’ve ever taken your son or daughter to their first game, bumped into someone you hadn’t seen in years at the ground, or felt the buzz of a last-minute overhead-kick winner — you already know why this matters.

Local football is one of the last places where families, friends and generations come together.
No screens. No barriers. Just shared moments, pride and connection.

As we head into the second half of the season, that togetherness can become real momentum.

Finish the leftovers. Wrap up warm. Bring the family — and a friend.

Let’s start the New Year as we mean to go on — together, and get behind our city.

@AlexMcCarthy21 @NewportCity_FC @FAWales After his appearance for Wales’ over 40’s, recently, he could probably still do a shift in midfield. But the transfer windows shut now ‘till January 🤷‍♂️

The future is built by those willing to risk everything.

They are the ones who chase the impossible and bring others into their vision of what comes next.

In a chaotic world, they are the ones who make sense.

A huge thank you to Kai Wint and James Waite for the time and effort you’ve put into him this summer — it’s showing.
Still so much to learn, both as a player and as a person, but moments like this make the journey even more exciting.
Proud of you, mate ❤️ An exciting season ahead

[Mike Shrubshall @Shrubshall]

Not often I share these moments, but yesterday deserves it.
I’m your biggest critic and your biggest supporter — yesterday you were outstanding.
It’s a position that doesn’t always get the spotlight, but you shone in it, showing real quality alongside the unseen defensive work
