Extortion threats have caused real fear for families, businesses and communities across B.C. — and we are treating this crisis with the urgency it demands.
This week, police leaders, CBSA and community partners came together to provide a public update on the coordinated work underway to disrupt extortion networks, support victims and hold offenders accountable.
We heard important updates: extortion-related activity has declined in B.C. since January, arrests and charges are being advanced, CBSA has opened hundreds of immigration investigations linked to extortion, and police are continuing proactive safety planning with families and businesses at risk.
There is still more work ahead, but progress is being made because agencies are working together — across jurisdictions, across borders and alongside the community.
To anyone facing threats: please report it. You are not alone, and help is available.

Eighteen charges. Thirty-five individuals removed from Canada, with twenty-five of these removals from the Pacific Region.
We established the BC Extortion Task Force — the first of its kind in the country and one of the largest integrated units in BC history, bringing together local police, the BC RCMP, federal police, and the CBSA.
Today I'm heading to Ottawa to work directly with our federal partners to advance Bill C-12 — legislation that will close the loopholes allowing extortion suspects to exploit gaps in our immigration system.
These actions are making a difference. And we will not stop working with law enforcement and our federal partners to keep people and businesses safe.

The BC Human Rights Code exists to protect people from discrimination and exclusion.
I’m appalled that the BC Conservatives support repealing protections for people based on race, gender and ability.
In British Columbia, human rights should never be up for debate.
Another decisive step to strengthen the quality and integrity of international education in B.C. has been taken.
Bill 7, the Post Secondary International Education (Designated Institutions) Act, has been introduced by @jessieksunner. If passed, it will firmly embed EQA standards in law, enhances government oversight, and equip government with the enforcement tools needed to address bad actors head‑on.
This legislation makes this government's commitment unmistakable: crack down on bad actors, protect international students, and uphold the credibility of B.C.’s post‑secondary system.
Premier @Dave_Eby and I are working together to build safer communities and create massive new economic opportunities for British Columbians — securing new export markets abroad and building major projects at home.
