Most brains identify people from internal facial features. The eyes, the spacing, the way a mouth sits. Studies of autistic children keep finding a different strategy: many rely more on external features. Hairline, hair, glasses, silhouette.

The likely reason is that faces are hard to read when eye contact feels aversive or uninformative, so the visual system anchors on the most stable, high-contrast cue available. A face changes with every expression. A huge mane of curly hair looks the same from across a room, in a crowd, on a TV screen.

Which means this isn't just a sweet gesture. A professional athlete reverse-engineered his own son's perception and made himself easier to find.
