How to fix internet outages in one step
Once the social cost of bridges falling down was high enough, civil engineering became a regulated profession. Now software engineering needs to become an actual licensed profession.https://t.co/YoNVCzjIxS #internet#Software
@LateNightSeth To be fair, the electromagnetic launch system (EMALS) on new Ford Class US aircraft carriers has big dreams but terrible performance. https://t.co/ZkruDrQOeU Despite a $2.4 billion overrun, the vendors have been unable to make the systems reliable. GAO reports confirm.
H1B visas in moderation are 100% compatible with jobs for Americans, as making large companies great will expand them making room for many more American jobs in the now larger companies. And the jobs will be more persistent, stable, and better paying!
@playlikeajet24@ernietedeschi NYTimes Paul Krugman keeps telling people that they are idiots and wrong, and the economy is astoundingly good. The "economy" he talks about, where the upper 1% of the country resides, is different from "the economy" where the rest of us reside.
@DrishtiDahiya surprisingly -- how to fall without getting hurt. They teach this in martial arts classes, like judo. Every kid could learn this when they don't have very far to fall. Every adult and especially senior could use it, especially in winter when slip and fall injuries are common.
@thechosenberg After decades in IT trenches I'd say at least 20% of critical information is never documented but carried in oral culture. With the speed software stacks change now, not to be plugged in will guarantee you'll hit snags that senior people and teams knew about.
@kareem_carr I don't understand most of what Kareem is saying, but if people randomly mix and randomly shoot the person to the East of them, we'd expect more whites to be killed because there are more of them. Are the rates in the graph higher than this background effect?
@AmyCEdmondson My favorite 737 flight instructor ("Mentour Pilot") speaks on what is the single most important thing in making aviation safe -- psychological safety to report issues. See timestamp 15:56 in this video https://t.co/AmJaA6POez
@QuantaMagazine Turing's computations need unbounded time with an unbounded tape which neither decays nor has noise. Humans ( and meetings ) have finite mental page sizes and both spend most time trying to recall where they left off. We need a new decision theory to guide that.
@kareem_carr Actually, long term it's wonderful! Such abuses will lead to AI trained to identify worthless hype or incorrect graphs, charts, images, thinking, claims, advertisements, and propaganda - whether generated by humans, AI, or politicians ( a 3rd form of life. )
@kareem_carr Actually I think most people fail to read the box about GLM eg, regression : it is not applicable to any system with a feedback loop in it, ie, psychology, sociology, government, almost any living thing, etc. We need new new statistics.
We’ve created a ‘pills or therapy’ culture around trauma when for lots of people, both will harm them, both already have harmed them, and they are told that if the pills and the therapy isn’t helping, it’s because they are not ‘putting the work in’. Or they need to have more therapy or more pills.
Fact is, for lots of people, neither of these approaches will work because there is no magic bullet for processing your trauma. Some people will need a hobby, to write, to read, to talk, to sing, to scream, to exercise, to cut certain people out, to leave their family, to make new friends, to connect with nature, to meditate, to make pieces of expressive art, to write music, to run a marathon, to reinvent themselves, to dance, to do a qualification, to climb a mountain, to get a pet dog, get some justice for what happened, volunteer their time to a cause, write a book, move house, to pray, to learn, to cook, to meet others who have been through it too…
People are slowly waking up to these realisations, these options and alternatives. Their trauma is frightening and valid, but the answer doesn’t have to be decades of polypharmacy and therapy with professionals who make you feel worse.
And before anyone starts with the whataboutery (as usual) I know the pills and the therapy helps some people, but this post is about the fact that we’ve created this rigid set of two options and everything else has been relegated to hippy woo woo bullshit when it is life changing for many people.
There is a $435bn industry sitting behind ‘mental health’ therapy, apps and medications - but teaching humans to understand and process their trauma in natural and positive ways that work for them as an individual makes $0 profit.
For me, being anti-pathology includes critical views of therapy, power dynamics, oppressive practice and harmful therapists, psychologists and counsellors - it’s not just about psychiatry doling out pills.
Humankind is being told that the ongoing trauma and distress in our populations is actually a set of mental illnesses instead of validating the mess we all live in. The abuse, the violence, the fear, the death, the loss, the anger, the inequality.
“Go to therapy. Take your pills. It’s you - its not the world. It’s not your abuser. It’s not your government. It’s just you. You need help.”
Think.
@EpiEllie Sure it is possible. Sexism and wealthism. "Poor people are undeserving and it's God's will that they be punished." Cf intro of flush toilets in the UK. Or ADHD, see minute 3:37 of Sir Ken Robinson's Ted Talk ( 76 million views of the full talk) https://t.co/2QhIspplYc
