A small independent newsroom. A massive police crackdown. An internet blackout. Thousands detained. And a team that refused to stop reporting.

Yesterday, @MaktoobMedia published nearly 250 news posters and videos in just 12 hours, documenting the protests, mass detentions, police violence and restrictions across Delhi. Our reporting reached millions.

I am deeply grateful to our small but extraordinary team, who worked tirelessly on the ground and behind the screens, often under extremely difficult circumstances.

Some of our journalists spoke about the additional fear they faced because of their visible Muslim identities. Reporting amid a police crackdown was already frightening; for some, their identities made them feel doubly vulnerable. Yet they continued doing their jobs.

Our editorial intern, Nada Saeeda, described how CRPF personnel followed journalists, pushed them with riot shields, obstructed their attempts to document detentions and threatened to detain them. She continued reporting despite the intimidation.

A special shout-out to our @maktoobhindi editor @Kassuism , @jibraan_uddin , cameraperson Usama Nidal, contributor Poorva Agarwal, @Fathima15Fida from our English team, our contributors @AktaristaAnsari and @aritry , and editorial intern Nada Saeeda. Independent journalism is not sustained by big resources alone. It survives because people continue to report, document and bear witness, even when doing so comes at a personal cost.
