Our Govt is planning to construct a preposterous Rs.11,000 Cr de-salination plant at Manori coast to produce fresh (demineralised & unhealthy) drinking water to offset the severe shortage of water in Mumbai and surrounding places.

This is in deference with the existing, eco-friendly & sustainable options.

The rain harvesting project which has multiple benefits is being totally ignored, resulting in daily wastage of millions of liters of fresh water going down the drain (and into the sea) daily.

We demand @CMOMaharashtra @mieknathshinde @SunetraA_Pawar @mygovMaha @moefcc @PMOIndia @mygovindia to adopt eco-friendly & sustainable options to this proposal as soon as possible.

It’s interesting to compare today’s live acoustic NPR performances with what was essentially the older generation’s approximate ~equivalent: the now iconic MTV Unplugged series from the late 80s+90s.

Boomers & Gen Xers got so much wrong, but they were indisputably better at making music. Compare the songwriting, sophistication, the musicianship especially, the artistry & sheer command of the craft on display in those MTV unplugged performances with so much of today’s cheap, plastic, fast-food music. Mexico sees 5 x the number of journos killed in absolute terms as does Pakistan. Pakistan arrests 3-10x the number of journos and yet somehow are higher on the press freedom index?

Adjust this for the number of journos and the story becomes worse.

There's a joke that barn owls must have been stoked when humans invented barns.

The reality is darker.

Barn owls are now heavily reliant on human structures (barns, silos, sheds, nest boxes) because we've destroyed most of their natural nesting habitat.

Modern farming, development, and the loss of large trees have taken away their original homes. In many places, the majority of barn owls now nest in man-made structures or the nest boxes people put up to help them.

They're incredibly effective rodent hunters, but they need safe, dark cavities to raise their young. Without us providing (or preserving) those spots, their populations drop fast.

So yeah, we kind of owe them the barns.

And the nest boxes.

And the untouched old trees.

The owls do good work for us, we just made their housing situation a lot harder.

I got so, so much to say about this man. This is going to be long, so buckle up.

There is a mental block in Indians that stems from the British rule. Someone who sits in a cabin, surrounded by papers and constantly looking busy has historically been associated with power, intelligence, and importance. During the colonial era, this perception made perfect sense.

The people occupying those offices were not merely employees - they were extensions of the administrative machinery that governed the country. The clerk, the officer, the babu, the man behind the desk with stamps, files, and authority, represented access to power itself. Entire lives could be altered based on what happened inside those rooms. Naturally, generations grew up internalizing the idea that proximity to paperwork and administration equated to status.

The British left decades ago, but cultural conditioning does not disappear with a flag change. The structure survives long after the rulers are gone. Even today, Indians subconsciously associate office environments with success and dignity in a way they rarely do with industrial or technical labor.

A BPO employee wearing a formal shirt, sitting in an air-conditioned office and speaking English into a headset often commands more social respect than a CNC machinist capable of manufacturing components with tolerances tighter than a human hair. One is perceived as “corporate,” the other as “factory labor,” despite the latter possessing an extraordinarily specialized and economically valuable skillset.

And that disconnect says something deeply uncomfortable about how we value work.

A skilled machinist can take a raw block of metal and convert it into high-precision components that may end up in automobiles, aircraft, industrial robots, medical devices, or defense systems. That requires mathematical understanding, spatial reasoning, knowledge of materials, tooling strategy, machine behaviour, thermal expansion, tolerance stack-ups, feeds, speeds, vibration control, and process discipline. Mistakes are expensive.

Precision is unforgiving. The work has tangible consequences in the real world. Yet socially, this individual is often viewed as somehow “below” someone doing process documentation for a foreign client in an outsourcing firm.

India developed an economy where appearing professional became more important than producing something real. Entire generations were taught that escaping physical or industrial work was the ultimate marker of upward mobility. Parents wanted their children in offices because offices symbolized safety, cleanliness, English-speaking environments, and social elevation.

Factories, workshops, shop floors, and machine environments became associated with struggle rather than expertise. The tragedy is that this mindset emerged precisely in a country that desperately needed strong manufacturing capability to become economically self-sufficient.

You can see the consequences everywhere. We celebrate startup founders making apps that optimize food delivery by 3%, but rarely admire the people who understand tooling, fabrication, embedded systems, production engineering, process automation, or manufacturing reliability. We romanticize “corporate culture” while ignoring the fact that nations become powerful through industrial competence, not PowerPoint presentations.

A society that cannot respect the people capable of building and maintaining physical systems eventually becomes dependent on those who can.

The irony is almost absurd. The CNC machinist, the welder, the industrial technician, the maintenance engineer, the assembly line specialist - these are the people who convert engineering from theory into reality.

Without them, designs remain drawings and simulations remain fantasies. They are the interface between ideas and existence itself. Yet because their expertise exists on a shop floor instead of inside a glass office cabin, society often treats them as lesser.

And honestly, it makes me sick to witness.

In 691 AD, Wu Zetian received intelligence that Zhou Xing was plotting against her. She instructed Lai Junchen to investigate, and to do so without raising Zhou Xing's suspicions. Lai Junchen arranged a banquet, invited Zhou Xing to attend, and over wine raised the apparently theoretical question of how he might extract a confession from a particularly stubborn prisoner whose case was giving him difficulty. Zhou Xing, drawing on his professional experience, recommended the urn-and-fire method as reliable for breaking the strongest will. Lai Junchen had the urn brought in and the fire lit, then informed his colleague that the empress had ordered Zhou Xing's arrest, and that Lai Junchen needed a confession.

Zhou Xing immediately confessed to everything. He was sentenced to death and exiled to the south; he was murdered on the road by relatives of a previous victim. Lai Junchen continued his work for several more years before falling himself in a subsequent purge. Wu Zetian ruled for another fourteen years.

The episode entered the language as the four-character idiom 请君入瓮, qǐng jūn rù wèng, "please, sir, step into the urn." It is still in current Mandarin, and it means a man hoisted by his own petard, undone by the precise method he had recommended for others.

Her name was Shehla Masood.

She was 38 years old, lived in Bhopal, and ran an event management company.

Then in 2009, she discovered the RTI Act.

She filed over 200 RTI applications in two years. She exposed illegal construction happening in plain sight. She fought to save tigers being poached by the very forest officers meant to protect them. She took on Rio Tinto, a global mining giant sitting on 27.4 million carats of diamonds inside a protected forest in Chhattarpur. Two district collectors were transferred to make that mining happen. She filed RTIs, went to parliament, and stopped it.

A month before she died, she gave an interview. She said she feared for her life but would not stop, because the nexus between politicians and babus was slowly poisoning this country.

On August 16, 2011, she sat in her car outside her home, about to leave for an Anna Hazare rally.

A hired gunman shot her once through the throat.

The CBI said the motive was a love triangle. Four people were convicted and sentenced to life. The mining angle was never investigated.

Her father told investigators that high profile people had conspired to kill his daughter.

Nobody listened.

She was posthumously given the SR Jindal Crusade Against Corruption Award, an honour shared with APJ Abdul Kalam.

India rewarded her with a bullet, then gave her an award, then forgot her name.
