There is a difference between just adopting a new name and using it and legally changing your name. Vance filed paperwork to legally change his name. He didn't just start using an alias.

If you want to argue about Ted Cruz the law says he can run with a nick name that has been generally used for a period of time. His middle name is Edward. In the US, Ted was a common nickname for Edward when he was young. So he became known as Ted. He isn't disputing his birth name. He shares it regularly. He probably had to sign a sworn affidavit to run with it.

Ilhan Elmi didn't do either of those things. She lied. She started using an alias to keep people from looking into her past. That is the difference.

If you want only legal names, it won't change the J.D. Vance's situation or Ted Cruz's. People will still call them Ted and J.D and they will sign documents with their legal names. The only change you may see is on the ballot their full legal name with a note about their nick names.
