1. How do I get access to GT anywhere for my daughter? She’ll be 6 next month. We’re based in Geneva, Switzerland
2. If the answer is “you’ll have to wait”, or “sorry, you cannot”, what’s the ‘next best thing’ stack you recommend? e.g. Synthesis for math. etc.? @gtmom@mbateman
What will evolve as status mechanisms (equivalent to dominance and prestige) in AI societies?
And how operationalized? Reputation networks? Compute access? Benchmark scores?
@sebkrier@tylercowen@ATabarrok
Moltbook should be closely followed by @JoHenrich. His “Secret of Our Success” argued prestige was humanity’s key for cultural learning. We got smart by getting good at figuring out who to learn from.
@oliverwkim Yes, my wife uses ChatGPT to practice B1 french dialogue and it works great. She even used it to prepare for an exam. You can even prompt it to correct/coach you when you make a mistake.
So this is public now, so: I’m officially starting a Works in Progress-style magazine focusing on the developing world!
It is called In Development, and first call for pitches will be coming at the end of the year.
@AdamSalisbury15@asteriskmgzn Wonderful article. Very clear and lays out the challenge well. I learned somethjng new - the magnitude of the variation in estimates between Meta and Worldpop, thank you!
@paulnovosad If you have plus, you should be able to select ‘chatgpt 5 thinking’ for when you need o3 type responses. Else in the prompt use “think hard” or similar instructions to try and kick it to thinking.
LAUNCH DAY 🚀 Today I’m launching a new podcast, Hard Drugs, with Jacob Trefethen (@JacobTref)
Our first episode is about lenacapavir — a new HIV drug that blocks infections with an efficacy rate of nearly 100%, and which could completely change the fight against HIV worldwide.
It’s also about the scientific journey leading up to this point, and how HIV was transformed from a lethal to a manageable condition.
3:52 How was HIV discovered? Where did it come from, and how does it attack the body and cause AIDS?
38:10 Antiretrovirals: How did scientists develop breakthrough HIV drugs — from azidothymidine to protease inhibitors to PrEP?
1:51:35 How does prevention and treatment work today?
2:19:03 HIV’s capsid and the breakthrough of lenacapavir, the first-approved HIV capsid inhibitor
2:50:36 How to develop long-lasting treatments
3:14:45 Lenacapavir’s near 100% efficacy in clinical trials
3:48:40 The impact of global programs against HIV, and can we now end HIV?
@_alice_evans@jburnmurdoch Implications of this are massive for Africa’s projected population.
How fast will fertility transitions come to African countries? This (highly uncertain) question greatly affects future estimated resources and needs.
If you loved Daniel Yergin's (@DanielYergin) "The Prize" or Marc Levinson's "The Box", you’ll find Frostbite compelling. But more broadly, as the book jacket says, it actually is "essential reading for anyone who eats or drinks in the 21st century." :-)
Rave Book Review.
Nicola Twilley's (@nicolatwilley) 'Frostbite' is a fascinating dive into the cold-chain, the vital role of cold infrastructure in global supply chains. It's a brilliant blend of engaging storytelling, deep research, and conceptual thinking.
So many more fascinating nuggets on:
- refrigerator design,
- optimal storage conditions for different kinds of fruit,
- the technology behind orange juice,
- food labels and more.
Just good stuff.
