Now it’s official. To enter the United States with an ESTA, travellers must hand over all their social media from the last five years. Not a rumour. An official rule. This matters even more as the US prepares to host the next Football World Cup, welcoming athletes, supporters and families from across the globe. Security and safety are essential — but so are serenity, trust and individual freedoms. And this comes from the same political voices lecturing Europe on free speech. JD Vance warned us about censorship here, while endorsing indiscriminate digital scrutiny there. When the “Land of the Free” starts vetting opinions, hypocrisy is clear — and liberties long admired worldwide are put at risk.
The US is trying to pull a "reverse Brussels Effect" on the UK by trying to get them to recognise their less stringent certification as equivalent to those of the UK. But doing so could threaten its future access to the EU market.
This illustrates an often unspoken dimension of trade policy: standard wars. Or how to answer the question "whose standard is going to be THE standard ?"
Trade agreements are not just about reducing tariffs, they can also aim for a level of standard alignment, meaning that some rules between the 2 countries will be deemed mutually acceptable or become similar.
This facilitates further trade, as companies won't need a different production/certification pipeline to export.
AND it creates regulatory pressure on third countries as they will be pushed to align as well to be able to access any of the 2 countries' market.
The EU is quite good at this because of its regulatory firepower and the size of its market. So the more trade agreements the EU makes, the more (some of) its rules and principles can become "inescapable" and de facto a global standard.

Well, it’s time for the world’s leading trading power to retaliate and hit back by taxing sectors that can’t afford to lose the European market. Hello, Big Tech.
A major escalation in the 🇺🇸🇪🇺 conflict. The 🇪🇺Parliament has no choice now but to kill the surrender deal that 🇪🇺President von der Leyen struck with Trump in July.
The lesson is clear: this man cannot be appeased.
How will Europe's leaders respond?
Courtesy reminder that Mercosur means only one South American steak for every EU citizen — per year.
Farmers will not suffer but actually largely benefit from the deal. And Europe regains geopolitical and trade strength.
Voting against would have meant a Morgenthau Plan 2.0.
