Raava and Vaatu are more than simply good and evil.

If I understand the wikis passage right and the actual data book entry on them they only became sentient as we know them AFTER they broke through the great divide.

Meaning they weren’t always split and are actually two halves of the same whole since the dawn of time in the avatar universe.

Maybe the wiki is wrong idk. But it gives them more nuance
