@disco___cat We need a grand bargain. “Road safety advocates” get 30/40 km/h in suburban streets; in return we get a minimum 100 km/h on any dual carriageway without intersections and 130 km/h on major highways.
It’s nuts that roads and cars get safer but speed limits only ever reduce.

@disco___cat @ALeighMP To an extent, sure. But we legislate product requirements all the time for many different reasons. Is it a good idea to legislate in this space? Probably not. But it’s not out of the realms of a government’s mandate. Particularly when there’s monopoly considerations.

@tylermcscifi @AndrewRCraig @bendreyfuss It’s not overkill at all. It’s the 6% where most of the meaningful info sits. In a 48-46-6 split, who the people who voted for 3 preferenced in 1v2 is most useful and can be easily collected and shared on election night.

@tylermcscifi @AndrewRCraig @bendreyfuss “First ranks” aren’t enough in Aus, which is why the counters (Australian Electoral Commission) also release which of the top 2 candidates all voters preferenced higher (2PP). This is what Andy laments is not released on the night in Alaska and it should be.

@tylermcscifi @AndrewRCraig @bendreyfuss Yeah, but you generally have a fairly good idea of who will be the final two. In Aus we have RCV and on election night they count “first preference” and “two party preferred” (which of the likely final two you’ve preferenced). 2PP is not official but allows media to “call”.
