Have you ever gotten really excited about a design? And looked into the details and thought -- why didn't I think of that.
Happened to me today. The design was on a color that was not quite white, and I can't believe how much of a difference it makes.
@Crunchy_DG Island hole was just an example. A good course should challenge all aspects. Distance, accuracy, elevation, OB etc. Scoring separation will happen naturally.
What is a course on tour that you think does the best job of creating separation?
@Crunchy_DG I see what you're saying. I feel like it's up to the best players to create the separation. A course designer can only do so much. If every hole was an island hole it would create more separation but I can't imagine that being fun to watch or play.
@Crunchy_DG Gotcha. You are saying scoring separation.. would want to watch a tournament where the winner is ahead by 10 shots? I guess that scoring separation isn't always predictable like that, but as a fan I want to see a handful of people close at the end. Just my 2 cents.
@Crunchy_DG I don't think the issue is the courses not being hard enough. Some of the par 4/5 holes should be par 3/4 and then the scoring average wouldn't be as low.
Idlewild is an older course, but one of the best. I believe it's in the top 5 if you were to ask pros to list favorites.
@Crunchy_DG I played Maple Hill last week. Top rated in the world and I can see why. Not sure it would be my pick, but it's definitely in the top 10. Overall udisc ratings are not reliable. Prefer dgcoursereview for that.
