Not even close. AO isn’t a blockchain. It’s a decentralized, asynchronous operating system where processes communicate through verifiable message-passing. No global consensus. No shared state.

Okay… but how do apps even run without global state?

Arweave Community:
Each AO process is an independent agent — it receives messages, performs computation, and writes results back to Arweave. The entire state is localized and fully auditable. The coordination layer is asynchronous.

Sounds abstract. What’s the advantage?

Arweave Community:
It enables unbounded horizontal scaling. Since processes don’t rely on a shared global state or synchronized blockspace, you can run millions of agents in parallel — each with their own execution thread.

And the messages between them?

Arweave Community:
Messages are immutable and permanently stored on Arweave. Each message contains input data, source, and destination. Any process can read from its message queue deterministically and produce verifiable outputs.

CryptoTwitter:
So AO basically turns Arweave from a storage layer into a compute platform?

Arweave Community:
Exactly. Arweave provided the “hard drive of the decentralized web.” AO brings in the CPU. It’s the backend layer Web3 has been missing — durable, decentralized infrastructure that runs forever.

What can you build with it?

Arweave Community:
On-chain AI agents, autonomous services, serverless backends, decentralized oracles, and truly persistent apps. AO processes can call each other, spawn new processes, and evolve — all independently.

AO mainnet is now live.

This is a huge step towards the kind of internet we in the @ArweaveEco have been building towards. I am immensely grateful to the incredible builders and our amazing community who worked so hard to make this happen. While this is a major milestone, we also know this is just the beginning.

My motivation for building AO comes from the same place as Arweave: I believe our online lives should come with guaranteed, immutable rights. Just as constitutions guarantee our rights in physical space. As we spend more and more time online, it's essential to ensure the rights we cherish are not lost.

Arweave laid the groundwork by providing permanent, decentralized, and uncensorable data storage. With AO, we're building on that foundation, adding a decentralized, open-access supercomputer directly connected to the internet. This enables confidential, decentralized computation and helps us shift away from the centralized control of Web2, opening up access to information and opportunity for more people.

This launch marks a new chapter, and I'm so excited to share it with you all.
