Anytime we talked about marriage and family, he would always say he wanted us to live in his parents' compound or at least very close to them.
When I asked why, he said his mother and father suffered a lot raising them and he never wanted to be too far away from them being the first son.
Then secondly, I remembered the first time I met his mom.
One of the first things she asked me was whether he had informed me that I needed to get pregnant before any marriage conversation could happen.
According to her, they didn't want a wife they would marry their son and then start looking for children after the wedding. And also I will be with her when I’m pregnant so she can keep an eye on me.
Looking back now, those weren't red flags.
Those were red banners waving right in front of my face.
Sometimes life teaches you that the signs were always there.
We just didn't realize how important they were until much later.
