I still remember reading the autobiography of Malcolm X for the first time. what stayed with me is the experience of watching a mind repeatedly dismantle and reconstruct itself. each stage of his life feels fully inhabited rather than retrospectively sanitised. few books have made intellectual transformation feel so immediate and hard-won. it was so good!!
any biographies that have stayed with you in a similar way?
imo exhortation alone won’t overcome the incentives governing Attention. we live in an unusually status-mediated Culture, so serious reading needs to become socially legible (therefore capable of conferring status) without being reduced to performative book-counting. we also live in a culture organised around convenience, so reading has to compete on friction as well as value. those are my current goals: make genuine intellectual engagement visible, and make it easier to practice consistently
for Romania, give Solenoid a try. it uses communist-era bucharest as raw material for a vast metaphysical novel about failure, escape, and the suspicion that reality itself has been badly constructed. at times I've felt as though I entered the country’s subconscious. it's so good!!
books are the most underpriced things on earth. for less than $20, you can shift your entire perception of reality, change the trajectory of your life, and become someone completely new. all in just a few hundred pages. insane.
@DeberryDenise@SketchesbyBoze honestly way less “graphic gore war book” than I expected and more “sad-funny war/time/trauma pinball machine”
chapters are tiny, ADHD friendly. feeling lost was part of the experience though!!
so it goes
@semochkin_alex I’ve built this exact thing!! you can give it a try at asktotle . com. let me know if you have any questions or feature requests. i can also hook you up with a free account if you’re up to give some feedback
students already drink, network and optimize status almost continously
the scarce thing college can still force on them is prolonged contact with material that resists immediate use. the value lies partly in remaining inside someone else’s structure of thought long enough for it to alter your own
