The Indian salaried class has been methodically stripped of every single inflation hedge available to it, one budget at a time.

You tried crypto. They slapped a 30% flat tax on gains, allowed no set-off of losses, and added 1% TDS on transfers.

You tried equities. Budget 2024 raised STCG from 15% to 20%, raised LTCG from 10% to 12.5%, increased STT on F&O, and also killed indexation for most other long-term capital gains.

You thought fine, I’ll diversify some savings abroad through LRS. They put 20% TCS on remittances above 10 lakhs for investments abroad.

You tried Sovereign Gold Bonds, because surely a government-issued, government-backed gold hedge would be the one clean instrument they would not mess with. Then Budget 2026 came along and removed the capital gains exemption for secondary market buyers.

And now the final insult.

The Prime Minister has publicly asked you to avoid buying physical gold for a year in the “national interest,” because gold imports use foreign exchange.

So let me get this straight. A middle class wagie earning in depreciating rupees, watching FD rates hover around 6.5% while real life inflation keeps eating his purchasing power, has now been told:

Crypto is taxed like a vice.

Equities are more expensive to hold and exit.

Foreign diversification gets hit with TCS.

SGBs are being wound down and tax-narrowed.

Buying physical gold is now unpatriotic.

Basically, every single exit from rupee depreciation has been systematically curtailed. You are expected to hold your savings in instruments the government controls, at returns the government sets, for a currency the government is rapidly inflating away.

Proxy War Reaches India’s Northeast: The arrest of six Ukrainians and one American by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) for allegedly “importing huge consignments of drones from Europe” for armed ethnic organizations in Myanmar is casting an unflattering spotlight on Washington’s regional strategy. The U.S. continues to back a military-linked government in Pakistan while, in military-ruled Myanmar, it is seeking regime change by aiding rebel groups — an approach that is increasingly blurring into proxy warfare with destabilizing regional consequences, especially for Indian border states like Manipur and Mizoram.

According to the NIA, the militant groups in Myanmar that the accused mercenaries were assisting have arms and training links with insurgent organizations in India’s northeast.

The seven men entered India’s remote Mizoram state without the permits required under Indian law before crossing the porous border into Myanmar with drones and other supplies. They were arrested after their return to India.

Myanmar’s internal conflict — fueled by external powers located far from the region — is spilling across borders. Myanmar’s deepening instability is already leading to an influx of refugees and militants into Indian states like Manipur and Mizoram, complicating India’s internal-security challenges.

In submissions before a New Delhi court, the NIA stated that the actions of the accused mercenaries posed a direct threat to India’s national security, invoking Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which pertains to conspiracy to commit terrorist acts.

The most prominent among those arrested is the American, Matthew Aaron Van Dyke, who has previously participated in armed conflicts in Libya and Syria, where the rulers were toppled with external assistance. The NIA alleges that he was leveraging that combat experience to train Myanmar-based insurgents in drone warfare, including assembly and jamming techniques.

Taken together, the arrests point to a more troubling reality: India’s sensitive northeast is no longer merely adjacent to the Myanmar conflict; it risks becoming an operational corridor. For New Delhi, this is no longer a distant instability but a direct security challenge.

American protective umbrella was the bedrock of not just the Persian Gulf/West Asia security system; but also for the post-war western alliance systems. One of the greatest impacts of the current war is that Iran, a country that has been under sanctions for 47 years, has drilled holes into this umbrella in the Persian Gulf using drones, rockets and missiles. I was talking to a contact in Abu Dhabi this morning. He said the U.S. has put the Arabs in a difficult position. Till now the basic understanding here was that the U.S. presence would offer protection to the monarchies. "Forget about the U.S. protecting them; now the Arabs are burning through cash and arsenals to protect American assets in their countries', he said. If this is what Iran can do, think about what Russia could do to frontline states in Eastern Europe in the event of a war with Nato, or what China could do to the Philippines and Japan in the event of a war in East Asia? So, not just the Arabs, all the frontline states would be taking note of the unfolding situation in the Persian Gulf.

IIT Bombay will make a windfall ₹55 crore gain from SEDEMAC’s IPO this week

SEDEMAC was incubated in 2008 by SINE in IIT Bombay - the University will be be selling ~₹27.6 crore worth of shares during the IPO

This is the largest exit at IPO for any university incubator in India (even more than IIT Madras with Ather Energy)

It is also IIT Bombay’s 2nd incubation to IPO - the first was ideaForge in June 2023 where the university sold ~₹1.5 crore in the IPO (with a total position size of ~₹6.7 crore)

One of the gravest mistakes Yasser Arafat made was his visit to Baghdad after Saddam's invasion of Kuwait. Arafat supported Iraq, linking the Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait to Israeli withdrawal from Palestine. It backfired massively. Palestinians were expelled from Kuwait. Arab aid for the PA was cut. The PLO lost international sympathy. And more important, Saddam lost the war. Arafat never recovered from this colossal mistake.

Imran Khan cut a sorry figure while sitting in the Kremlin exactly four years ago when Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine. It was an ill-timed visit, which galvanised the external and internal opposition to his rule. Imran went back home and lost power in a couple of months.

It's important to exercise caution while visiting countries, even if they are your close partners, in times of war. The timing matters. The regional mood matters.

Day 1 of the AI Impact Summit turned to be a pain for us.

I came genuinely excited, it was the first time the summit was being hosted in India, and I wanted to show up personally to support the ecosystem and the government’s push.

But what happened next was shocking.

At 12 noon, security personnel arrived to sanitise and cordon off the area ahead of the visit by PM Modi visit at 2pm.

I explained that we’re building India’s first patented AI wearable at NeoSapien and requested a chance to showcase it.

One officer told others to let me stay, and they left.

Then another group came and ordered us to leave immediately. Seemed like there was lack of co-ordination between the security itself.

I asked: “Should we take our wearables?”

They said, others are leaving even laptops behind, security will take care.

Trusting them, I left. Hoping that the wearables will be safe, and If I am lucky, it might catch the eye of PM Modi.

Gates were closed from 12–6pm. Much much longer than expected.

Later we found out that our wearables were stolen.

Think about this: We paid for flights, accommodation, logistics and even the booth. Only to see our wearables disappear inside a high-security zone.

If only security and official entourage had access, how did this happen?

This is extremely disappointing.
