More than 5.76 lakh people were fined for #smoking in #public across #India during 2025-26, with authorities collecting over ₹5.19 crore in penalties under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), according to data tabled in the #RajyaSabha. The figures, however, also reveal wide variations in enforcement, with several states reporting no violations or fines during the year.
The Union health ministry said enforcement of the ban on smoking in public places is primarily the responsibility of state governments, while the Centre issues advisories and implementation guidelines, including a dedicated handbook for law enforcers issued in 2024. Smoking in public places is prohibited under Section 4 of COTPA, and violations attract a fine of up to ₹200 under Section 21 of the Act. @timesofindia@MoHFW_INDIA
With 35 laboratory-confirmed Chandipura virus #infections and 22 deaths among 184 suspected cases reported in children under 15 across #Gujarat this monsoon, and the #virus also affecting children from neighbouring Rajasthan, the Centre on Wednesday deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) to strengthen outbreak investigations and accelerate scientific efforts to contain the disease. #Chandipura virus, a sandfly-borne virus that primarily affects children, can rapidly progress from fever to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), a severe #braininfection. While sandflies are the established vector, scientists are investigating whether mosquitoes, ticks or mites may also be involved in the current outbreak. @timesofindia@MoHFW_INDIA@JPNadda
Medicines routinely prescribed for high #bloodpressure and #heartdisease may also help make #antidepressants work #better, according to an #AIIMS study that raises the possibility of repurposing an existing class of drugs for treating depression.
The prospective study found that patients with depression who were already taking ACE inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) showed significantly greater improvement after six weeks of antidepressant therapy than those receiving antidepressants alone. They were also more likely to achieve a clinically meaningful treatment response. @timesofindia@aiims_newdelhi
Dr Prasun Chatterjee, Group Clinical Lead, Department of #GeriatricMedicine and Longevity Sciences, #ApolloHospitals, and former professor at AIIMS, said the findings reinforce that healthy ageing depends not only on diet and exercise but also on social and cultural engagement. #Socialinteraction improves memory and mood by boosting serotonin and dopamine, enhancing emotional well-being, memory and a sense of purpose, which encourage healthier lifestyles. In the Indian context, he said, activities such as visiting parks, cinemas, theatres or places of worship can provide similar benefits by promoting happiness, social connection and purpose. Prof Rajesh Sagar, #psychiatrist at #AIIMSNew Delhi, said social and cultural engagement promotes healthy ageing by strengthening emotional support networks, improving cognitive function and reducing chronic stress. He said loneliness increases the risk of depression, anxiety and cognitive decline while reducing motivation for physical activity. He advised older adults to stay socially connected by regularly meeting friends and relatives or joining walking groups, book clubs, music classes or spiritual gatherings. @timesofindia@aiims_newdelhi@HospitalsApollo

Hundreds of #MBBSaspirants with borderline #NEET-UG ranks are being forced to either settle for colleges in other states or risk waiting until #Delhi's stray vacancy round because top-ranked candidates can temporarily hold seats in two parallel counselling systems in the capital. Documents reviewed by TOI show that candidates with ranks 54, 68, 76, 103, 183, 243 and 273 appeared in both the Medical Counselling Committee (#MCC) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) allotment lists, allowing them to retain multiple options before making a final choice. @timesofindia@MoHFW_INDIA@JPNadda #counselling #mbbs
