They call him a dictator.

I have watched Narendra Modi for years.

Long enough to know that dictators do not behave like this.

And, truth be told, there are moments when many of us have wished he were one.

A little less patience for those who confuse the streets with the State.

A little less mercy for those who turn violence into a bargaining tool.

A little less tolerance for those who believe that by shouting louder, blocking roads longer, or threatening disorder, they can bend an entire nation to their will.

We have often wished he would answer every challenge with the full weight of the State.

But Narendra Modi has rarely been a man who answers noise with noise.

He waits.

He listens.

He lets the storm spend itself.

He lets the anger rise, break against the walls of the State, and slowly reveal what lies beneath the noise.

A dictator does not do that.

A dictator does not bend.

Yet on 19 November 2021, after months of the farmers’ agitation, Modi stood before the nation and announced:

“आज मैं पूरे देश को ये बताने आया हूं कि हमने तीनों कृषि कानूनों को वापस करने का निर्णय किया है।”

Today I have come to tell the entire country that we have decided to withdraw all three farm laws.

He did not surrender because he was weak.

He did not retreat because he was afraid.

He simply understood something that those intoxicated by protest often do not:

A government must sometimes choose the peace of the country over the victory of its own argument.

And today, on 25 July 2026, the same man has done it again.

The students’ demands were accepted.

The agitation ended.

And Dharmendra Pradhan resigned.

The man they call a dictator has once again shown the patience of a leader who does not need to win every battle in order to remain in command of the war.

This is not a man ruled by ego.

Not by impulse.

Not by the fever of the moment.

He is calm.

Composed.

Almost unnervingly patient.

While others react to the noise, he studies the silence between it.

While others rush to answer every provocation, he allows time to strip away the theatre.

And while the world mistakes his stillness for surrender…..

he is deciding.

That is what his critics never understand.

They see the quiet river and assume there is no force beneath it.

They mistake restraint for weakness.

Patience for fear.

Silence for sleep.

And then, sometimes, the river changes course.

The government withdraws a law.

A minister resigns.

A protest ends.

And the people who spent months declaring that the State had been defeated suddenly discover that the State was never fighting for the satisfaction of defeating them.

It was calculating something larger.

Dictators demand obedience.

Narendra Modi has, time and again, demonstrated something far more difficult:

the strength to stand firm

and the wisdom to step back.

The strength to absorb pressure…..

and the discipline not to react to every provocation.

The strength to let the storm rage…..

without allowing the country to be destroyed by it.

So call him a dictator if you must.

But history has a strange way of exposing the difference between a ruler who cannot bend

and a leader who chooses when to.
