🇯🇵 No, BBC. We are not "struggling with our identity" in Japan. It is you who is struggling with your identity.
We know who we are. We are Japanese. We are not Muslims. We have temples and shrines. We do not have mosques.
We will never forget who we are even if you do.
My perfect Sunday in Germany:
1. Wake up alone at 6:31am to the sound of the call to prayer from a nearby mosque
2. Check my wife's location, she is at a random hotel
3. Make instant coffee (the machine uses too much electricity)
4. Spend 24 minutes separating yoghurt cups into four bins
5. Check local news, train station closed after another stabbing
6. Walk 11 kilometres to the farmers market
7. Buy three organic apples for €17
8. Come home, watch a German documentary about the dangers of racial stereotyping
9. Fall asleep to the sounds of men shouting in Turkish and a police helicopter circling the neighbourhood
I love my life in Europe
As you become an adult, you realize that things around you weren't just always there; people made them happen. But only recently have I started to internalize how much tenacity *everything* requires. That hotel, that park, that railway. The world is a museum of passion projects.

Hopper made loneliness visible.
But how do you make a painting feel lonely when nobody looks sad?
He thought through every detail in Nighthawks.
▪️ Nobody talks.
▪️ The street is empty.
▪️ There’s no visible door to the diner.
▪️ Nobody seems to care about anyone else.
Everyone is close together. Yet somehow, everyone is alone.
That’s exactly why it feels so lonely.
Asaf Rejuwan, one of the Israeli survivors of flight 1073 wrote on Facebook:
״I don't usually post on social media, but today I felt something burning deep inside me that I simply had to share.
Ever since the incident where the terrorist's attempt to hijack the Flydubai flight was thwarted, there has been a lot of coverage in the media, and I’ve been asked many times what factors I believe prevented the terrible disaster that could have befallen our people had that despicable terrorist succeeded in his plans.
Today, I think I received a very special and interesting answer to that question. Naturally, after the incident ended and we landed safely on the Land of Israel, I felt the need to thank many people... the passengers who cooperated, my lioness of a wife and all the mothers and fathers who protected their loved ones, the children who stayed composed, and every Israeli passenger on that plane.
Yesterday, I was part of a group of passengers interviewed for an international channel. As each passenger went into detail about how they experienced the flight, we realized something very important- something you only understand when the dust settles and you get into the small details during intimate conversations among yourselves.
We realized that every single passenger on that flight had a role, every passenger on the flight had a role.
One passenger was responsible for communicating with Israel's security services
I discovered there was a passenger on board who provided a mobile hotspot and made sure to share it with others
Another female passenger sat and recited Psalms
A passenger made sure to pass along headphone cords to tie up the terrorist
Passengers kept track of where we were going to land using GPS maps
An Australian passenger was the only one on the plane who could make calls back to Israel from an enemy country (Saudi Arabia)
And the list goes on... And, of course, the amazing Yaniv, the wonderful Tzvika and Tali, the hero Shota, the great man Or, and many other great friends who lent a hand.
I had no doubt that after such a great miracle, I would be attending synagogue on Saturday morning to recite the Birkat HaGomel (the prayer of thanking the God of Israel after a lifesaving miracle)
I am not a religious person. I believe in God in my own way, and I don't usually look for signs in everything. But today, something happened that completely astonished me. Completely by chance, today in the synagogue I read from Parashat Devarim (Deuteronomy 33:26):
"There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to help you, and in His majesty rides the skies."
אֵין כָּאֵל יְשֻׁרוּן רֹכֵב שָׁמַיִם בְּעֶזְרֶךָ וּבְגַאֲוָתוֹ שְׁחָקִים
I read the verse, stopped, and got goosebumps, and so did all the other worshippers who knew the story and understood why I was there with them.
After everything that happened on that flight, after the fear, after the storming of the terrorist, and after realizing how thin the line between life and death really was- finding myself facing those exact words, "rides the heavens to help you," was a moment I can hardly explain.
I don't know if it was divine providence, a coincidence, or simply a moment that took on a profoundly deep meaning for me. But today, in the synagogue, as I recited Birkat HaGomel, I felt mainly one thing:
Thank you. Thank you for life. Thank you for the miracle. And thank you for the privilege to stand here and tell the story.
Am Yisrael Chai 🇮🇱״
NEW: Interrogation of the Omani pilot: the objective was to crash the plane into the terminal building at Ben Gurion Airport.
The assault on the other pilot was timed deliberately. He waited until the aircraft was over Jordan, near Israel, before moving against him.
From that point the plan was to fly a normal landing approach so nothing would appear unusual. Only in the last seconds, once interception was no longer possible, would he turn the aircraft into the terminal.
The plot was thwarted by one decision. The wounded Indian pilot got the cockpit door open at all costs, and that is the only reason the attack did not succeed.
The Flydubai injured pilot has given his incredible account of the nearly fatal terrorist attack by his Omani copilot:
-Initially the copilot asked to pray 5 minutes before the attack began the Pilot thought this was unusual but thought nothing of it, 5 minutes later he was struck viciously in the back of the head.
-The pilot vision blurred and was unable to defend himself momentarily, a brutal fight then ensued between him and the co pilot who was using a cabin axe to stab him repeatedly, at one point he managed to open the door and scream for help but the copilot managed to shut and lock the door.
-The pilot severely injured now at this point lying on the floor then noticed the plane dramatically dip in altitude with the copilot pointing its nose down, and people outside the cabin door banging and screaming.
-In a last ditch effort the pilot manages to fight his way past the copilot and unlock the cabin door once again, allowing the crew and passengers outside to burst in and subdue to copilot as well as stabilise the plane.

"Les dije: pero, ¿qué están haciendo? No rompan nada.
NEW: Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar Testimony:
“The co-pilot stood up to pray, and out of respect for him, I didn’t look back.
A few minutes later, I felt a strong impact and thought something had happened to the plane. But then I was hit again and realized it was him.
I opened the cockpit door once, but he closed it, and I fell to the floor. I realized I had one more chance.
When I opened it again, I saw people waiting to rush inside.”
