Teaching social-emotional learning skills to kids in chaotic classrooms is like teaching swimming techniques to someone who's drowning. Students can't regulate emotions they don't have the cognitive bandwidth to deal with.

One of the most powerful social-emotional interventions is ensuring students experience genuine achievement in challenging academic work. Students who feel incompetent will struggle emotionally regardless of how many mindfulness exercises they practice.
