In his #EGEssaySeries piece, Sirus H. Dehdari examines how economic insecurity and cultural concerns — particularly around immigration — can interact in ways that strengthen support for right-wing populist parties and reshape political landscapes.

I post a lot of social science research.
I do it because it's tremendously fun.
But I think it's important to remember a few general things when interacting about research:
■ No study I post is perfect. Some are likely to be deeply flawed! I try to filter out studies that I think are just bad science. But I won't catch everything. So, a certain level of informed scrutiny is well-warranted.
■ I don't have the time, nor do I receive compensation sufficient to reproduce/check the robustness of the effects I post.
■ Science doesn't exist in a vacuum. But not all science is junk.
■ Replication is really important! Some effects are robust, but won't generalize. We won't know which are which until scholars run replications.
■ If you know of a study that is related to one that I post, please share! I try to signal boost relevant replies.
■ I don't write all the papers I post. (You'd think this would be obvious, but trust me--every time I post an article people make this mistake)
■ I don't have the time to read the articles I post for you. If paywalls are an issue, however, I will send you a free copy of any paper that I post. DM me! Seriously!
■ A little learning in statistics can be a dangerous thing.
■ Science will, inevitably, challenge your prior beliefs about the world. We tend to get angry when that happens because its uncomfortable. But I've found great learning and growth comes from lingering in that discomfort!
