Egypt and Somalia discuss regional security as Houthi conflict escalates
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, held their second phone call in four days on Sunday, as tensions continue to rise across the Red Sea and the wider region.
The two ministers discussed bilateral ties, developments in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea security. Egypt again reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The talks come as Egypt signals a greater willingness to support Saudi Arabia amid escalating Houthi attacks from Yemen. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said Egypt is prepared to take necessary measures to defend Saudi Arabia if requested.
The developments are significant for Somalia, which sits along the Gulf of Aden near the Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s key maritime routes. A recent Egypt-hosted summit involving Somalia, Sudan and Eritrea also stressed the importance of Red Sea security and freedom of navigation.
On the anniversary of his passing, I remember the late Özdemir Bayraktar with heartfelt gratitude, deep respect, and sincere du’as.
He was not merely an engineer, but a visionary whose dedication, faith, and perseverance helped pioneer Türkiye’s indigenous UAV technology and contributed greatly to the advancement of its defense industry on the world stage.
His tireless efforts and unwavering determination continue to leave a lasting legacy, inspiring generations and reaching far beyond the borders of Türkiye.
May his legacy continue to benefit the Ummah for generations to come.
