KAA Under Fire as Mombasa Airport Online Taxi Drivers Decry Unfair Treatment and Excessive Fees

Concerns have been brought to light regarding the treatment of online taxi drivers operating at Mombasa Airport, with allegations of systemic challenges tied to policies enforced by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

Key issues appear to centre around perceived inequities in parking allocation, with drivers saying they are sidelined with only 20 parking slots allocated to them, which they argue is insufficient for the number of drivers using the facility.

Drivers are also questioning excessive parking fees, frequent harassment and punitive clamping charges.

"Hello Cyprian. I want to raise an issue about something happening at the Mombasa Airport. There have been issues with the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and the online taxi drivers there. Apparently, most of the KAA staff own the vehicles that operate as yellow cabs, and as a result, they look down on the online taxi drivers.

Firstly, they have only allocated 20 parking slots for online drivers, which is honestly not enough. Every time online drivers enter the airport, they are required to pay 100 KSH as parking fees. An online driver may come and go inside the airport at least 3-5 times a day, probably raising significant revenue for the KAA. However, the KAA staff seem to have a bad attitude towards them.

The 20 slots are insufficient because there are many online drivers, and it is not like they stay there permanently, as they come and go constantly. Today, they had a meeting to raise their concerns, but the KAA staff appear to be unresponsive to their issues."
