When Businesses Die, It Hurts 🥹
I'm sorry, but I'm not thinking about investors. I am thinking about founders.
Every time I read disclosures like the one DreamFolks released yesterday, it leaves a lump in my throat.
Because behind every business, behind every quarterly result, every investor presentation, every announcement, there are owners in the arena.
Men and women who take all the risk, who burn midnight oil, who face regulators, lenders, clients, employees, and investors, all so that people like us can make money on their success.
We sit outside, analyzing numbers on a screen. They live inside the fire.
And yet, sometimes, businesses die.
When you die because of reckless capital allocation, over-leverage, vanity-driven expansion, or blind diversification, that’s on you. You swung too hard, and the market punished you.
But when you die because you became irrelevant, because the industry around you shifted, because consumer behavior changed faster than your ability to adapt, that’s the cruellest fate of all. It’s not negligence. It’s not arrogance. It’s just the brutal force of time.
Think about Kodak. They invented digital photography but failed to commercialize it. Think about Nokia, once 40% of global mobile phones, and then almost overnight, gone.
Think about HMV, or Blockbuster, or even closer home, names in textiles, cassettes, and two-wheelers that we grew up with, now footnotes in history.
It is not that they didn’t work hard. It is that the world around them changed faster than their strategies could.
DreamFolks’ update about the discontinuation of domestic airport lounges is a reminder of this fragility. Here is a company that built a niche, that expanded into services, darling of investors and consumers once, and yet, faces the possibility of irrelevance in one of its core offerings.
It’s easy for us to pass a comment. To reduce it to valuation multiples, to draw red arrows on charts. But imagine being in the promoter’s shoes.
Waking up every day knowing that you carry the hopes of thousands of employees, partners, and investors on your shoulders.
That’s why I always say: entrepreneurs are the gladiators of capitalism. They enter the arena. They bleed, they stumble, they rise, they fall. We, the investors, are merely spectators. We clap, we cheer, we bet money on the outcome.
So yes, it hurts to see businesses die. It hurts because behind the ticker symbols and the scrip codes, there are human stories.
Families. Legacies. Dreams.
Let us remember this the next time we talk about a stock collapsing or a company losing relevance. Behind every “falling knife” is someone who once built it brick by brick.
And maybe, just maybe, as investors, we need to respect not just the winners, but also the ones who fell trying. Because without them, there would be no market at all.
DreamFolks, may you chase and realize another dream. All the best.🫡

Critics called it the "dumbest acquisition ever."
Today, that "dumb decision" is worth over $500 BILLION.

1/4. In 1998, I was in 10th and my father asked me to get a website made for him, as a small "web design" company from Noida had contacted him and told him that it will help him get more business. I spent a lot of time going through various versions of the website, colour schemes
