From pensions and trans rights to Bills 18 and 20... How do we make sense of the UCP's policymaking patterns? The right answer might also be the simplest one: cheap talk.

@DrJaredWesley@FSnagovsky Hands off pensions! The dichotomy. She and the UCP pretend to stand up for rights and have done nothing but the opposite. In fact they have done nothing. #ableg
“As Alberta’s gatekeeper-in-chief, Danielle Smith is ripping away not just the rights of Alberta voters, but the ability of municipalities to effectively serve Albertans. She is setting up a totalitarian government for herself that is deeply disturbing.” - @kylekasawski#ableg
No one can call any Canadian provincial government undermining the will of voters in municipal elections - conservative. This isn't even remotely conservative. It's radical - radically wrong.
DANIELLE SMITH ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE
EDMONTON – The Alberta NDP is calling on Premier Danielle Smith to revoke proposed legislation from Minister of Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver when the legislature resumes next Monday.
“Bill 20: The Municipal Affairs Amendment Acthas been described as authoritarian, an attack on local democracy, massive overreach, and a stripping away of Albertans’ rights. Albertans and our communities have not been asking for this massive overreach into their local business by the province,” said Kyle Kasawski, Alberta NDP Critic for Municipal Affairs.
“Danielle Smith introduced this Bill following her proposed legislation that would block municipalities from accessing federal funding unless they ask for the province's permission.
“As Alberta’s gatekeeper-in-chief, Danielle Smith is ripping away not just the rights of Alberta voters, but the ability of municipalities to effectively serve Albertans. She is setting up a totalitarian government for herself that is deeply disturbing.”
Bill 20 was originally teased as being a vehicle to allow for candidates running in local elections to tie themselves to a partisan banner, somethingover 70 per cent of the Alberta Municipalities membership said they do not want.
At introduction, the Bill also included proposed ability for Cabinet to dismiss any local councillor or mayor, to be able to overrule local bylaws, give cabinet final say on recall petitions and much more.
“Danielle Smith wants to control everything. Pensions, police, health care, schools, local councils. Any dollar spent anywhere in the province, and any decision made by anyone. Everything,” said Kasawski.
“Bylaws are made by local councils based on the day-to-day needs of the Albertans who live in our cities, towns, and rural areas. The needs of Albertans are different across the province and that’s why locally elected governments are best equipped to represent the people in their jurisdiction. But Smith thinks she knows best, for every corner of the province, and every person in Alberta.”
Councillors from across Alberta have weighed in, with local councillors in Calgary and Edmontonexpressing heavy opposition to Bill 20, one saying there was no research, evidence, or engagement to support the bill.
“Smith’s Minister has been unable to defend this bill since its introduction,” said Kasawski. “We are calling on Minister Ric McIver and Danielle Smith to cancel this proposed legislation when the sitting of the legislature resumes next Monday.”

I am not an NDP voter nor do I live in Toronto. But Olivia Chow is a threat to Doug Ford. Love or hate her politics, she is well connected politically and can get stuff done that has the potential to make Ford look bad. The upcoming duel over Ontario Place will be interesting
Back in 2010, Jared & I first met as our respective bands shared a stage & split a show at #yeg’s Haven Social Club.
Yesterday, we caught up in our current roles as MLA & Past President of @Jewishcalgary at the Suds & Spuds Stampede Breakfast.

“That positive reception was evident on the midway Friday afternoon. Trudeau — dressed in a white western shirt with green trim, blue jeans, cowboy boots and, of course, a white hat — was swarmed by thousands of people mugging to take a selfie with him.”

"The medical profession must conscientiously object to any government agenda that lacks evidence and has a high risk of perpetuating ongoing harms"
This 👏 @ABDanielleSmith & @Alberta_UCP's "Compassionate Intervention Act" has no evidence of benefit & actually evidence of harm
From the DM’s…
Looks like Three Hills wants to celebrate the “True North Strong & Free” with…
Um…
A US flag on the right and a confederate flag on the left?
Because Canada?

Conversation with an Albertan farmer past night.
But you would not vote Liberal, right? Trudeau, blah blah.
Me - What does PP offer other than Trudeau rage farming? What policies is he presenting which are helpful?
Silence. Well. You're right.
Talk about policy vs parties.
