Nine books that changed how I think about behavior, belief, and attention.
Not a listicle. Just the ones I keep returning to when I'm stuck.
1. Thinking, Fast and Slow — Daniel Kahneman
The two-system model of the mind. If you only read one book on how you actually decide things, read this.
2. Influence — Robert Cialdini
Six principles of persuasion, all backed by named studies. I've never designed a product without it on the desk.
3. The Power of Habit — Charles Duhigg
Cue, routine, reward. The loop that shaped how I wrote Hooked.
4. Mindset — Carol Dweck
Fixed vs. growth. The research on how belief about ability changes performance is stronger than most self-help books ever get to cite.
5. Drive — Daniel Pink
Autonomy, mastery, purpose. Pink translates Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory into something you can actually use at work.
6. Flow — Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
What it feels like to be fully absorbed, and the conditions that make it possible. The opposite of distraction has a name.
7. Predictably Irrational — Dan Ariely
The systematic ways we deceive ourselves. Read it before you trust your own next big decision.
8. The Willpower Instinct — Kelly McGonigal
McGonigal takes the research on self-control and makes it practical. Pairs well with the argument that willpower isn't a finite resource.
9. Man's Search for Meaning — Viktor Frankl
The one that doesn't fit the behavioral-science shelf but belongs on it anyway. Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose.
Which of these have you read? And what would you add?
THIS IS THE BEST OF HUMANITY
At the 2026 Boston Marathon, runners Aaron Beggs (from Northern Ireland/Britain) and Robson De Oliveira (from Brazil) stop to help fellow competitor Ajay Haridasse cross the finish line after he collapsed near the 26-mile mark
Six beliefs quietly run your life. Most of them aren't true.
You didn't choose them. You inherited them — from parents, teachers, culture, the last decade of your own self-talk. And because you never examined them, they operate like facts. They aren't facts. They're tools. And some of the tools you're using are broken.
Here are six I've had to put down:
1. "Willpower is a limited resource."
Carol Dweck's work showed ego depletion only appears in people who already believe willpower runs out. Believe it's finite and it acts finite. Believe it's more like an emotion — waxing and waning with how you feel — and it behaves like one.
2. "I'm addicted to my phone."
Calling normal, uncomfortable behavior an addiction hands your agency to the device. The phone isn't the cause. It's the cope. The real question is what you were trying to escape when you picked it up.
3. "I just need more focus."
The opposite of distraction isn't focus. It's traction — both from the Latin trahere, to pull. You can't say you got distracted unless you know what you got distracted from. No plan, no distraction. Just a day.
4. "I don't have time."
You have time. You have priorities that don't match your calendar. A schedule builder decides in advance; a to-do list maker reacts all day and calls it busy.
5. "I'll do it when I feel ready."
Ready is a feeling that arrives after you start, not before. Waiting for it is the most sophisticated form of procrastination we've invented.
6. "This is just who I am."
Identity is the most powerful belief of the six — and the most editable. Vegetarians don't debate bacon. Indistractable people don't negotiate with the urge. Change the label and the behavior follows.
Beliefs aren't facts. They're tools. If one of yours isn't working, put it down and pick up a better one.
