/6 AFL’s review of required disclosure forms reveals that since Judge McConnell became Vice Chair of the Board of Crossroads Rhode Island in 2009, the organization has received over $117.6 million in government funding (accounting to the end of 2023).

Crossroads received over $42 million from 2020 to 2023 from government sources, including the state of Rhode Island, a named plaintiff in the lawsuit.

One of the blessings of a serious health trial is that suddenly you find your community jumping into action. Our immediate neighbors have been dropping off meals regularly, while deliveries from faraway friends arrive almost daily.

Our church not only offers prayer and encouragement, but fellow members in the medical field have been offering gratis consultation. Brothers and sisters like @DrFrankTurek and @KellyKullberg have connected me with concierge doctors and oncologists who DAILY answer questions and give advice and review my scans and reports for FREE.

My coworkers sprung into action, sending gifts to cheer me up and calling on their connections to some of the top medical minds in the country who, again gratis, have provided expert insight and personally made calls to vet my oncology options to make sure I was making the best decision (I don’t want to mention names without permission, but hopefully I can at some point. For now, I’ll just say that I know from personal experience that some of Trump’s scientific appointees are incredibly compassionate, generous people).

Brian’s coworkers have walked us through how to use our different insurance policies to get the most from our coverage. One has offered to help with recordkeeping.

The other moms at my girls’ dance studio have rallied to get them to and from classes. And have covered expenses for big events just because they wanted to bless us in a difficult time.

The moms in my homeschool co-op have stepped up to make sure learning goes on as chaos is reigning a bit in our home right now.

Ministries like Grace to You and Founders have sent boxes of books and other spiritual resources (as have friends at Canon).

This is not an exhaustive list. Without even setting up go fund me or meal train or anything formal like that, we have been inundated with so many gifts and offers of help and connections that we’re not even able to avail ourselves of all of it.

Now I want you to imagine what all this care and support looks like if it’s just delegated to the government. Do you imagine that some state agency, some social workers who do not know us would provide anything like this?

The purpose of biblical charity and care is what our family is experiencing right now. And it cannot be compelled by taxpayers and distributed through some soulless federal agency.

What the Bible asks of us is so much deeper because it’s not just about money and covering physical needs. It comes with love and enriches community in a way that goes on long after the physical need is over.
