@SkyNews @MrMatthewTodd May 1975 to Sept 1976. Duration and character: Driest 16-month period in over 200 years. Prolonged high-pressure blocking led to exceptional heat, sunshine, and dryness. This one is not going to be that.

@1goodtern Also 1976, had 15 consecutive days at 32.2°C or higher, that record also will say intact. It is also worth remembering that the heat in 1976 was home grown from a low basline, this year's was due to imported trapped heat. Hence the warmer night time temperatures.

@1goodtern I'm an old one, UK as a whole, (tmax) for summer 1976 (June–August) 21.0°C, provisional data for June 26 to 14th July 26 the tmax mean is 19.9°C. Unless the remainder of July and Aug stay hot, this will be one record 1976 will keep.

@Met4CastUK Can't find any data to match the 2018 and 1995 summer streaks you mention. Although they were good summers no double digit runs occured where they had days over 30, 5 & 6 days yes. 1976 had 15 days where it reached @ least 32.2°C consecutively.

@StuartC2025 @metoffice The Met Office and news sources emphasize 2026's intensity and records (especially in June) but highlight 1976's exceptional persistence for very high temperatures. It is unlikely at present that we will reach 32.2°C on 15 consecutive days as in 1976.

@AdrianRamsay The wheat crop forecast is still good, 1.3 million tonnes more expected than last year. This will be up by 2 million on 2024. Barley yields down due to a 10% reduction in area planted, the lowest in a decade as most of that 10% has been planted with rapeseed.
