Using abstract musical theory as a prescriptive basis for composing strikes me as oddly naive. I sympathize with Schopenhauer's view of music as the art that most directly connects us with our primitive, irrational selves. In that context, reasoning can actually be an impediment.

Unlike many of the professors here, I don’t agree that reading music is “trivially easy,” because if it was, you’d just spend an afternoon on YouTube, and the problem would be solved.
