Theseus Ship and the Body

In the dialogue, St. Macrina makes an analogy between the soul and the craft of a painter. The painter has the knowledge of the various paints and the scheme of the painting such that if the painting were to be destroyed, it could be brought back together by the maker. In this example the paints are analogous to the constituent "atoms" or indivisible particles of the body. Thus the soul is related to the body poietically.

On the topic of resurrection, she raises the Theseus' ship observation--that for the body to have the same identity, it must be made of the same atoms as the original. These atoms belong to the soul as property to an owner. The problem with this perspective is, as I have pointed out in the past, that the body is not made up of the same atoms or cells across time.

However, experimentation indicates that essential parts of the body such as blood cells and even bone is constantly replacing and rebuilding itself.* This is true fractally at the level of chemistry and microbiology and eventually macrobiology.

My main point here is that what we understand as a "body" cannot be separated from time. Therefore discussion on its resurrection must not treat it as an object, but as something closer to a narrative. In this sense, the relation of the soul to the body is just as much *poetic* as it is poietic.

* Brain cells are notably the least replaceable cells, followed by heart and eye tissue. We should find this unsurprisingly given the close association throughout history between these organs and the soul (or other beyond-temporal parts of man).
