@davidu FWIW the CPA in the house says they’ve tried a lot and keeps coming back to QBO. They are in the process of migrating last of their clients off of Xero (pricing and support didn’t work well for them). Most of their clients are the size you describe. HTH

eg
"you should have told me that you were blocked by..."
vs
"dw...next time you're blocked...just let me know"

The former implies wrong doing vs latter is blameless & focused on solving for the future.

Normalize leaders giving teams breathing room in their roadmaps and encouraging team members to rest when it makes sense. Every day can't be a balls to the wall type of day without eventually burning your team out. Especially in the world we've lived in the last few years.

The biggest challenge the software engineering industry has today is not related to engineering.

It's related to teaching.

How can we train (very) junior engineers to get to a level where they are autonomous enough, in a reasonable timeframe? Can we do this in a remote setting?

One of the biggest stepbacks in the industry related to this from 10-20 years ago is how pairing and pair programming is no longer "cool".

It was one of the best ways more experienced engineers taught. Few things beat two people solving one problem, even today, learning-wise.
